The pressure to put ethanol into gasoline was a result of American farmers not getting as much as they wanted for their grain crops. So states like Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, etc. pressured the oil companies to begin offering ethanol-spiked gas. Now, once again, the American farmers will be shouldered aside by foreign ethanol-producers who can product it cheaper. And all the while the Mexican poor cannot buy corn meal for their tortillas.

More pressure for them to slip North over the border to find work and food.

"Those growers are going after what pays best now," said Ismael Vicente Ramirez, head of agriculture at Mexico's Tequila Regulatory Council.

Despite rapid growth in tequila drinking, especially overseas, the over-supply of agave has driven prices for the plant to rock-bottom levels.

Farmers are economically driven - whatever is most profitable for them is what they're going to grow. Everyone jumped on the agave bandwagon when it became profitable but to the point there was soon a glut. Now the market demand is for corn and they're switching to planting that. Corn has more uses than agave overall but it is possible that there will be an overabundance of corn and they'll switch back to agave or something else. It's all a gamble in the commodities market.

Good thing I mainly drink wine and rum.
