Futureland by Walter Mosley

I think I must be ignorant. I think I must be colorblind. I think I must exist in a state of oblivion.

First off, I have read other books by Walter Mosely and thoroughly enjoyed them. So I grabbed Futureland. It's a little Sci-Fi ish (not my regular genre), but I can deal.

But then the message of the book really starts hitting home, and I am saddened greatly. I haven't finished the book, though I will. But I was so troubled I need to share the message of the book.

I am white. Therefore I am evil. I deserve to die. I am a horrible human being because I am white. Everybody who is not white hates me because I am white.

I never knew this. As matter of fact, I'm one those odd people who see smiles, and folks brain matter (intelligence) first. I have a wide gambit of friends and acquaintenances who are from all walks of life and all colors in the rainbow, have all kinds of religions and even are from different countries and nobody has ever told me I am white and they hate me for it. I'm very sad. Actually, I've never even looked at myself as white before. This is a very eye-opening experience.

So as I said I'm troubled about this. Can anybody reassure me that I am not white?

1) You're white and I hate you for it. There -- now somebody has told you. :huggy:
2) I want to meet your blue friend(s). I have always wanted a blue friend.

Back to the book - I've gone on to read others reviews and many people are "right on, that's the way it is", while others think it's "depressing" and "racist".

:ohwell:

So I looked up Walter Mosley and seems he has ties to the Black Panthers. Does this tie enforce his perspective in the book? Or is it just an overwhelming sentiment that all non-white people have?

It's cause she was there with her brothers. They stayed at the Venetian.

I doubt it's the sentiment of ALL non-white people, but it could certainly be that of a large segment. Racism isn't dead on either side of the fence and it's that outspoken minority that most people use to form decisions.
