I grew up in Los Angeles. I witnessed the slow but steady degeneration of the neighborhood I grew up in. Before guns, they killed each other with knives and large rocks. I kid you not, back in the early 70's a guy was held down and a large rock (it was being used to make a car a "low rider" kept in the trunk) came in handy to bash in his head. They put the rock back in the trunk so they could look cool riding away. Then they started terrorizing the high school, then jr high, and then they were in the elementary schools. The thing that made no sense was that they were Mexican, fighting with each other because they lived in different areas. For instance I lived in Bassett, they fought with Puente, they fought with valinda, they fought with El Monte, etc. One time we got caught in the middle of a gang thing. We were at an uncles in El Monte, they were gang members, cousins who lived in Puente were there too, next thing we knew the El Montes were pissed cause "Bassett" was there....next thing I know, everyone is screaming and running into the house cause the gangbangers were running at us with knives and cutting the window screans etc. We just wanted to eat out tamales in peace dangit! Any way about a week later El Monte cuz got gutted, but they tucked those guts back in and he survived. It seemed to be all around us. Gun shots, graffiti, stupidity...Mexicans killing each other, blaming los gringos for theyre problemas. I left that place and have lived all over the place since then, and swore that if I ever moved into a place that was starting to go through that crap,... I would move, and let them have at each other. You have to get away from that. Even though you look like a group and have a language and way of doing things in common, You live in America, the best country in the world. The worst thing that could have happened to me was to stay there and never learn english, properly, never learn that I am an American, who happens to speak spanish and tan easy. The worst thing that could have happened to me was to not learn about George Washington, The constitution, That Mexico treats it's citizens (The Indios) like crap, and that I could marry whomever the hell I want to. I was told to never marry another race religion or culture. My parents were ignorant that way. I realise that my worst enemy was the people that were like me.
