Gas Prices!

Dems are getting exactly what they fought for

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has a wonderful little snippet up at The Hill's Congress Blog, As Gas Prices Rose, Democrats Ignored Opportunities to Help Production:
Gasoline today at the pump is $1.25 more, on average, than it was when the Democrats took over Congress. Why is that a good place to measure? Because during that period, we've had an opportunity to build more refineries, and the Democratic majority voted it down. We've had an opportunity to open up additional parts of the Outer Continental Shelf and the Democratic majority voted it down. It's clear that on the production side of the equation, this new majority is not interested in doing anything.

...
what we have today is exactly what the Democrats and the environmentalists have wanted for years - high gas prices that should, by their very nature, reduce demand. The only thing that the Democrats would like more is if a few U.S. oil companies were going bankrupt at the same time, but unfortunately for them you can't have both things at the same time.

Remember, it was just last July that Democratic Representative John Dingell of Michigan announced that he wanted to increase the gas tax by 50 cents, as a punitive measure that he believed would cause consumers to drive less, thus reducing "greenhouse gases." You'd think that the recent rise in gas prices, and the subsequent howling from the Democrats about how awful the rise is for the average voter (err, consumer), would cause the Democrats to reconsider any increase in the gas tax. On the contrary, Dingell is still pushing the issue, even though polls are showing that Americans are against such a move.

Gas Prices - Dems are getting exactly what they fought for

I could never understand the premise that the citizens United States need to lower their standard of living. What does that accomplish? Less envy from the rest of the world? Less use of natural resources that can be exploited by other countries such as Cuba drilling for oil off our coast?
Will someone please enlighten me!

The energy policy of our government is useless and most politicians still won't address the issue.

Dems aren't the only ones who are getting exactly what they asked for. I remember talking to a lot of Republicans over the past years who were incensed, to say the least, when I dared to mention that gasoline should be controlled just like water and electricity are. I was called a socialist, a communist, and other names for daring to suggest that anyone should dare tell the oil companies or anyone else (aside from the water and electric folks who are providing low-cost services on a not-for-profit basis... we'll keep those) how much they can charge or how much they can make! Remember back to those days? When all these increases were just the result of supply and demand issues, which I said was total baloney?

Now look at us today. The price of gasoline is completely in the hands of futures traders and investors who are getting out of the dollar market and looking for new places to stick their money. Gasoline prices are spiralling not because of shortages, refineries being disabled, storms, potential wars, or any other such nonsense... the Chinese haven't gone into hyperdrive and started running up demand... hybrids and 30+MPG vehicles are selling like hotcakes... and still the price is spiralling up, and all because the speculators I #####ed about years ago are driving the market and since it's benefitting the energy companies they are doing nothing to counter it.

Well, this is what you guys get for falsely believing that unbridled capitalism is any better than unbridled socialism. You are getting your cherished freedom of the business sector and all for the price of everything you buy getting more and more expensive and soon to be paying over $4 for a gallon of gas that should cost you $1. Hope the joy you feel was worth the price you're paying.

Why do you think it should cost $1? Is it because that's what you want to pay?

Think about it, it is pumped out of the ground, refined and trucked all over the country. I bet you have no problem paying $1 for a 20 oz bottle of water or $3 for a cup of coffee.

No, I base that price on what other countries who pump their own oil, and refine their own gasoline, pay at the pump... which is about $1. Also, if you were to keep buying foreign oil and just require the oil companies and refiners to operate on a not-for-profit basis, just like we demand the electric and water companies do, then when you subtract all the profits (not the costs, just the profits) from the equation, you get gas at about $1.10 a gallon.

Actually, I do mind paying $1 for a bottle of tap water with a fancy label and I don't drink coffee. But to your point, if I did drink bottled water, I don't buy 20 gallons of it at a time. If people had to pay $128 everytime they wanted some bottled water, I'm guessing that $1 for 20 oz would fall out of favor pretty quick... same goes for that $960 20-gal cup of coffee. By the way, the average cost for a gallon of tap water is about 1.7 cents, or about .026 cents per 20 oz bottle, so if you had to pay for your not-for-profit tap water at the same rate you pay for your for-profit bottled water, your water bill would be about 20 times what it is now... and I'm just guessing you would definately take issue with that.

It's just supply and demand! Just buy stock in an oil company. they're only getting a 10% return of investment. Gas prices are totally fair and I for one will continue to take my SUV muddin' on Sundays.

At least until the mob decides to hang these people by their entrails. Shouldn't be long now.
