Gas pump question

At a single hose pump, if you buy high test after the previous patron buys regular, do you get a hose full of regular?

To find out just take the nozzle off the hook, lower it and pull the handle before activating the pump. Drains all the cheap gas out.:howdy:

Yes. There is probably a quarter to a half gallon of gas left in the hose. So, you will get a little of whatever grade the last person bought.

Generally speaking, it shouldn't matter much. But, I realize that you are probably thinking about when you fill up your motorcycle. If you are only getting 1 gallon, then the 93 octane you paid for might really end up being 90 or 91 octane, if the last person was getting 87. If you are getting 2 1/2 gallons, then your 93 would probably end up being about 92.

When filling up a full tank in a car, the issue is mostly meaningless. The exact octane that you get from different gas stations at different times probably varies more than the extra gas in the hose will cause it to vary.

Some gas stations actually only have low-octane and high octane gas, and when you buy mid-octane you get a mixture.

Well, yes. And no. Depends.

Newer (all "vapor recovery" and "drive a way protected") setups will give you 91/93/87 whatever you order...
Here's how they work:
The station opens at 5 am. First customer of the day, Joe Blow, rolls in, slides in his CC, pulls the handle out, presses buttons, and the pumps load up. He squeezes the trigger, reducing system pressure, and they kick on, pumping fuel.
When he finishes and replaces the hose handle, a sensor reads an increase in pressure, and the pumps back off. Most of the sytems then wait until the transaction code is processed, and then depressurize the unit & hose clear down to the one way valve (next time, look at the hose. See that metal ring thingy about 2 ~ 3 feet from where the hose comes out of the "box"? That's a combination valve/breakaway, so when your GF drives off w/the hose stuck in the nozzle... well, enough said).

So, you roll up & order up some 93... Ok, there will be a few drops of low grade, but that's it - a few drops, nothing more. Pull up to a newer station today & squeeze the handle - that's exactly how much "previous grade" you'd get. Remember, the operator wants top $$ - any evaporation = lost $$$.

Now in the older systems, one may find more - but still the volumes would be less than a fraction of a liquid cup.

Hope that helps,
J

Makes sense
I filled the bike at a Shell station (single hose) in VA and the bike ran noticably better on Shell 93 than on it's usual diet of Sheetz 93 (multi hose).
I normally have to run at 70+ mph to use 6th gear on the bike or it luggs. It ran fine two up at 65 after the Shell fill up.

Thanks

I notice that here too. 93 from Sunoco is better in the bike than 93 from Sheetz or WaWa.

Just as a simple observation from my Harleys that I have owned (One Carb, one EFI) Neither bike enjoyed a solid diet of Wawa gas. I fill up at least every third tank at another brand if not every other. They would start running a little rough and I would notice a slight drop in gas mileage. And be careful of the Burchmart in Mechanicsville (in the center median in the 45 zone) I was out with a friend on our bikes we both filled up after stopping there and the whole tank for both of us was an adventure of stalling and stumbling engines.
