At the risk of turning this into a debate (I was just looking for friends! ), I daresay I've known a few more gay men than you, and not a single one has ever chosen to be gay. The APA has compiled 35+ years of research on human sexuality and has come to the conclusion that it's such a complex combination of biology, physiology, neurology, psychology, ad nauseum plus a myriad of environmental factors that the reason some people are straight, some are gay, and some are somewhere in between is so complex that it will likely never be fully understood. Bottom line, though, is that it's just the way people are.

Thicken your skin, please. This can't possibly be the first time you've run into people who are threatened by homosexuality. If you choose to be different from the norm, you should expect a reaction. It's just the way it is. And you can either rise to the occasion and give it back, or you can get touchy and pissed. The choice is yours.

No, skin's thick enough, I just find it interesting that I should be told essentially "watch yer back 'round these parts." Not exactly the warm welcome I was hoping for, but I can handle it.

It's usually a month or two. It really depends on how long it takes you to agree with us.

Thanks for the welcome. My partner is in the Navy, and got reassigned here, so I followed. We're quite happy together, but still getting used to the area. He just spent 6 months in Iraq, so we're VERY happy to have him back safe and sound!

Alive and well, unfortunately. It was extremely difficult when he was in Iraq, because if anything had happened to him, I'd be left out in the cold. Plus moving here, I don't get any benefits or help from the Navy to help me relocate, so I had to do it on my own (and I'm still job-hunting).

Fortunately I had quite a few friends back in San Diego whose husbands or wives were in the military, and they were very helpful to us. Hopefully I'll be able to meet a few folks out here who are just as kind.
