He was taken off guard, but got over it quickly and we still laugh about it. He's quite comfortable in his sexual orientation to not be too freaked out by gay men hitting on him.

but I also dont have a problem with gay people in the military. The best person to ask that question would be a homophobe, maybe you should start a poll lolMany years ago I had a gay roommate. He would act straight until my date would leave and then give me his critique... "Honey, he is so yummy. When you are done with him can I have him?"Christy said:![]()
I had two gay friends that Steve knew of and was cool with, soooo, I threw a party, that essentially turned out to be all gay men except for Steve.
They were all giving him the what for as far as comments to me "oooh, he's so handsome" "don't he look good". I will never forget Steve rounding me up to stay close by him and telling me EXACTLY "I feel like such a piece of meat, now I know what it feels like to be a woman ogled by a pack of men".

If no one is hitting on him (and anyone making unwanted sexual advances to anyone else is not accepted in the military), then it sounds like the straight guy's issue, doesn't it?Star said:I dont see what the big deal is with gay people in the military. They would have to be stupid to hit on another military guy that they know wasnt gay, they would get the beat down so quick they wouldnt even have time to apologize and say they were drunk. I think part of it though, least what i had heard, is that the hetero men, feel uncomfortable in showers, beds, etc etc, with gay men because they always feel like they are being "checked out".
i dont believe they are right in their issues, just that thats how they see it. I dont agree with it, if i were a straight guy, i would like to think that if some gay guy was checkin me out, i must look pretty damn good lolEsprix said:If no one is hitting on him (and anyone making unwanted sexual advances to anyone else is not accepted in the military), then it sounds like the straight guy's issue, doesn't it?
It's like blaming the woman who was raped for wearing a short skirt (IMHO, at least).

See, Steve had a whole different theory on my gay male friends. I treated them just like my girlfriends and would change in front of them and be much more touchy feely with them with the hugging and kissing etc.. Steve swore up and down that my friends weren't really gay, and that he was going to start using their tactics to see women disrobed.

Exactly - there are THOUSANDS of gay men and lesbians currently serving in all branches of the armed forces, and no policy is stopping them from proudly serving their country. It's sad, but even though the "don't ask/don't tell" policy was supposed to be a compromise, it's actually resulted in more discharges. The U.S. has lost hundreds of perfectly qualified, hard-working servicemen and women because of this policy, and, in some extreme cases, gay men and lesbians have been killed by their fellow servicemembers. It's heartbreaking.Christy said:I have never understood why so many people fear gays to the point of obsessive hatred. It's just silly, there are plenty of gays in the sea, the supply isn't drying up anytime soon, so you hetero men really should take Vrai's advice and unclench.![]()

That is true, and you know, if you do a little digging, you will find that the gay military members during WWII were treated with much more adoration and tolerence. I'll have to dig up all the data, but I watched a show on the History Channel specifically addressing gays in the military throughout history, and they had several interviews with gay vets from WWII and they all talked of how well they were treated, since many of them were so entertaining. :shrug:Esprix said:It's sad, but even though the "don't ask/don't tell" policy was supposed to be a compromise, it's actually resulted in more discharges. True. So wouldn't it make more sense to let them serve openly?DD214 said:Well, if the person is in the closet, it is seen as a security risk since that person could be a prime target for blackmail.
The same argument was used against racially integrating the military, but although there were some initial problems, they were quickly taken care of. When the Commander in Chief gives an order, you're expected to follow it without argument. If the person is open about their homosexuality then the efficiency of the command could be compromised, as it will most likely become a point of contention for some people.
And yet women and men work together side by side every day, because any unwanted sexual advances are taken seriously and dealt with by the individual making those advances. Furthermore, if there aren't any sexual advances, then it sounds like the straight guy's got the issue, not the gay guy.One of the major differences between the work environment of the civilian world and the military world is that the military frequently lives in close quarters for extended periods of time. Many men/women would be very uncomfortable sleeping/showering/etc. if they knew the person next to them was possibly lusting after them. It's the same reason they don't have males and females cohabitating in the barracks.
And, again, they said the same thing about integration. Thank goodness Truman had the foresight to do the right thing, take a stand, and let every American serve his or her country in the military.Whether you agree with the reasoning behind the military's policy towards homosexuals or not, the fact of the matter is that it is a deadly serious job, not a social experiment.
And yes, that was the way it felt. I still don't fault them for it. Maybe it just expanded my viewpoint...:shrug:Christy said:![]()
