Genesis 1 Vegetarians

Genesis 1:29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

At this time... man was meant to be a vegetarian. Humans have an appendix to help them digest plants. In those days the appendix must have gotten quite a work out.

The commentaries seem to agree with enduringword.com in that humans were vegetarians until after the flood.

God gave man dominion over the whole earth, but only vegetation is specifically mentioned as being for food. Seemingly, before the flood, the human race was vegetarian, but after the flood, man was given permission to eat the flesh of animals (Genesis 9:3).

I never noticed that before.

Our digestive system also is indicative of a preference of a plant based diet. Human intestines are designed to have a long travel time to remove as much nutrients out of our food as possible. Early hunter/gatherers had a high percentage of roughage in their diet. An appendix would have been useful for people eating in this fashion. A canine, such as a dog, has a more streamlined digestive system. This is better suited for a carnivore's diet
