Genesis 13:8 So Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. 9 Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”
It seems to me that Abram knew that God would provide for him. I mean, it was God who choose this place for him. He probably realized, by now, that he should have listened to God in the first place. So allowing Lot to leave was actually just getting back to God's plan.
It was also Abram who brought Lot along. If Abram told Lot where to settle on the split, and Lot didn't fair well, Lot could have blamed Abram forever. So it was pretty smart of Abram to tell Lot "you decide".
