Now we've all heard the story of how God made his promise to Abram after Lot left.
Meanwhile.... in Lot's life.... war was breaking out all around him. The war went on for 12 years and in the thirteenth year the people revolted.
Here's how one commentary describes the aftermath.
They say bad things happen to good people. Sometimes good people put themselves in a position, in spite of their every effort, however unknowingly, for bad things to happen.

Genesis 14: Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim 9 against Kedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some of the men fell into them and the rest fled to the hills. 11 The four kings seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away. 12 They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom.

Archaeologist Nelson Glueck documented the destruction left by these kings: I found that every village in their path had been plundered and left in ruins, and the countryside was laid waste. The population had been wiped out or led away into captivity. For hundreds of years thereafter, the entire area was like an abandoned cemetery, hideously unkempt, with all its monuments shattered and strewn in pieces on the ground.
Now, the confederacy of five kings involved Abram. Because Abram was a man of honor, he would fight for his nephew life and safety.
Since Lot lived among the wicked people of Sodom, we are not surprised he was also taken captive. Those believers who conform to the world must expect to suffer for it.
