Genesis 20:8 Early the next morning Abimelek summoned all his officials, and when he told them all that had happened, they were very much afraid. 9 Then Abimelek called Abraham in and said, “What have you done to us? How have I wronged you that you have brought such great guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done.” 10 And Abimelek asked Abraham, “What was your reason for doing this?”

It is sad to see that Abimelech - the pagan king - was in the right, and Abraham - the man of God was in the wrong, and Abimelech told Abraham so.
What did you have in view, that you have done this thing? This was a logical question for Ahimelech to ask Abraham. Abraham certainly did not have the Lord in view when he lied and failed to trust God.

This is from the easy English commentary.
Abraham had already prepared for a situation where some other man might want to take Sarah. Abraham had already told her to say everywhere that Abraham was her brother. So they were saying something that was only partly true. And they had even said it before they needed to do so. Abraham was not ready to trust God. Abraham took many years to learn that he should trust God in every situation.
