Genesis 25:24 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. 25 The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him Esau.[d] 26 After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob.[e] Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.

27 The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. 28 Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.

d. Genesis 25:25 Esau may mean hairy.
e. Genesis 25:26 Jacob means he grasps the heel, a Hebrew idiom for he deceives.

This is what studylight.org says about these verses.

Circumstances surrounding the birth of each child were responsible for their names. Esau referred to the hairiness of the first-born child. Jacob referred to the way the second born was holding on to the heel of his brother.

Additionally, the idea of a heel-catcher meant something in that day. It had the idea of trickster, con-man, scoundrel, or rascal. It wasnt a compliment.

I found these comments at the bible.org site.

Esau was born first, and he came from the womb red and hairy. The Hebrew word to describe the color of Esau sounded similar to Edom and may have prepared the way for his nickname as it was decided in verse 30. The name Esau somewhat resembles the sound of the word meaning ‘hairy.’

Jacob came forth from the womb grasping the heel of his brother Esau. Jacob’s name was suggested by the Hebrew word for ‘heel.’ Later events, such as the barter of the birthright in verses 27-34, indicate that the name, taken in its negative sense, referred to Jacob’s grasping and conniving nature

So Jacob was a real heel!

Jacob wanted out first, but it was not to be. They were fighting in the womb, and the fight still goes on today. God's plan was fulfilled by His demonstration of how easily one can be overcome and fooled by human weakness (Esau's hunger was more important at that instant than the birthright of his inheritance). Nothing has changed - so many are more concerned with the world and their possessions than they are of their own eternity.
