Genesis 40 The cupbearer

Genesis 40:9 So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. He said to him, “In my dream I saw a vine in front of me, 10 and on the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup and put the cup in his hand.”

12 “This is what it means,” Joseph said to him. “The three branches are three days. 13 Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer. 14 But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison. 15 I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon.”

Ugh.... I've been reading the commentaries for some time now and the commentaries on these verses are so boring and so preachy, they really are worthless.

Joseph told the cupbearer [butler] that in three days he would be back in his old job. It's going to take three days for the cupbearer to find out if Joseph really can interpret dreams. That's all he cares about. In three days he'll be "out of here" or Joseph is in for some big problems.

Meanwhile, Joseph is so sure of his interpretation, he asks for a favor. He didn't ask for gold. He could have, but instead he just wanted to get out.

People are arrested every day who are innocent. The innocent are generally naive and so they get caught up. Those who should be caught are good at their craft and walk the streets longer. Generally, the courts today bend over backwards to get it right.... and sometimes they fail in both directions, letting the rapist walk free and jailing the innocent.

Joseph was innocent of attempted rape. He was guilty of driving his brothers crazy, which IMHO was a short trip, but the fact remained, he was indeed innocent. So if the cupbearer [butler] did remember his kindness, then it would be a good payment for the service Joseph had rendered.
