Genesis 49 "I look for your deliverance, Lord"

Genesis 49:16 “Dan[h] will provide justice for his people
as one of the tribes of Israel.
17 Dan will be a snake by the roadside,
a viper along the path,
that bites the horse’s heels
so that its rider tumbles backward.

18 “I look for your deliverance, Lord.​

Ok.... so Dan was the first child of Bilal. Bilal was Rachel's handmaiden. Rachel was having an awful time conceiving while Leah was popping out babies. So she arranged a surrogate by giving Bilal to Jacob [Israel]. Dan was supposed to be the answer to their prayers.

Rachel felt that she would be vindicated through this son, and thus his name suggested that God had heard her cries and had judged in her favor. Dan would judge his people, as one of the sons of Israel, but he would eventually serve more destructive purposes. The incident in Judges 18 serves to reflect the bent which this tribe took. In the listing of the tribes of Israel in Revelation 7:5-8, Dan is omitted.​

OK... so the story in Judges 18 only takes a few minutes to read. It's quite interesting. The tribe was looking for a place to settle. They sent out 5 scouts. These scouts found a house with some hand made silver laid idols. They also found a valley, set off all by itself, where the people were living in harmony. When they reported this back to the tribe, it was decided that they would take the idols. They talked the priest into going with them too. Then they destroyed the city of the innocent people in the city named Laish, and renamed it Dan. There they rebuilt the city, naming it Dan, and settled in. The priest they picked up led them in worship. They worshiped the hand made little gods they had stolen in a valley where they had murdered the happy people who lived there.


Is it any wonder Jacob cried out "I look for your deliverance, Lord" after talking to Dan?
