Genesis 5:6 When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father of Enosh. 7 After he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. 8 Altogether, Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died.

9 When Enosh had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan. 10 After he became the father of Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Altogether, Enosh lived a total of 905 years, and then he died.

12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel. 13 After he became the father of Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 Altogether, Kenan lived a total of 910 years, and then he died.

15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he became the father of Jared. 16 After he became the father of Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17 Altogether, Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years, and then he died.

18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch. 19 After he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Altogether, Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died.

21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. 22 After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. 24 Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. 26 After he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Altogether, Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died.

28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son. 29 He named him Noah[c] and said, “He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed.” 30 After Noah was born, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31 Altogether, Lamech lived a total of 777 years, and then he died.

32 After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham and Japheth.

b. Genesis 5:6 Father may mean ancestor; also in verses 7-26.
c. Genesis 5:29 Noah sounds like the Hebrew for comfort

I left the majority of the verses alone this morning. I wanted to show a couple of things. Enoch didn't die. Noah was 500 years old before he became a father.

Studylight.org says this about Enoch.

Walking with God means walking by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7), walking in the light (1 John 1:5-7), and walking in agreement with God (Amos 3:3). After walking like this with God, it was as if one day God told Enoch, You dont need to walk home. Why dont you just come home with Me?

Hebrews 11:5 tells us the foundation of Enochs walk with God: By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, and was not found, because God had taken him; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. You cant walk with God, or please God, apart from faith.

It seems Enoch began to walk with God in a special way after the birth of Methuselah. The name Methuselah means, When he is dead, it shall come. At the birth of Methuselah, Enoch had a special awareness from God that judgment was coming, and this was one of the things that got him closer in his walk with God.

Jude 14 also tells us Enoch was a prophet; even from his vantage point long ago, he could see the second coming of Jesus.

The easy English commentary summarizes these verses.

We do not know whether this list of names is complete. Perhaps it leaves out some names. For example, verse 6 may mean, ‘Seth lived for 105 years and then he became a father. And one descendant of Seth was Enosh.’ And other verses may have a similar meaning.

Genesis tells us that ancient people had very long lives. They were much longer than modern people’s lives.

Enoch did not die. Instead, God took him into heaven. The Bible tells us about one other person who did not die. That was Elijah. God took Elijah into heaven. (See 2 Kings 2:1, 11.)

This Lamech is not the same person as the Lamech that Genesis 4:23-24 mentions.

This does not mean that Shem, Ham and Japheth were born at the same time. This verse probably means, ‘Noah lived for 500 years and then he became the father of Shem. And in the next few years he became the father of Ham and of Japheth.’

Enoch, and throw in Elijah, are the only two humans to walk the earth that were not taken up by death, but taken up hand in hand with God.

Talk about talking the walk, and then walking the talk.
