Genesis 6:4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.
The first time I read about the Nephilim was only a few years ago. They still intrigue me. Searching through the commentaries, there are lots of links to this verse. I think the definition of Nephilim depends on whether you lump verse 4 in with verses 1-3 or not.
According to the commentaries, the Nephilim were either fallen angels or they were the children in the line of Cain who married the children in the line of Seth. There are also several commentaries who say that they were offspring of alien beings visiting the earth.
I'm not ruling anything out.
The result is the same... they weren't what God had in mind when He put Adam in the Garden. They weren't what God had in mind when He allowed Cain to live after murdering his brother Abel. They were corrupt. Their physical being and their actions were not from Eden. Good women marrying bad men was not working out very well for society.
They are mentioned again in Numbers 13:33. I'm sure we'll see these people again and again.
