Dr. Maureen Montgomery, Deputy Superintendent of Schools, 301-475-5511, ext. 32178

LEONARDTOWN, MD – On Monday, September 14, 2020, St. Mary’s County Public Schools (SMCPS) was notified of an employee at George Washington Carver Elementary School (GWCES) who tested positive for COVID-19 as a result of participating in a non-school related social event outside of St. Mary’s County. Through the process of contact tracing, and in coordination with the St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD), several employees at multiple sites who attended the event and others considered close contacts were placed under quarantine and sent for testing. Testing revealed that additional school system employees who participated in the social event were positive for COVID-19. As a result, GWCES will be closed for all staff through Friday, September 18, 2020. This decision was made in full consultation with local public health officials. As a further precaution, SMCPS will begin immediate mitigation efforts for the school building to include extensive cleaning. Food and meal services at GWCES will also be closed through Friday.

They are also delaying going back to school for the rest of St. Mary's County Schools. What a bunch of ****s. They had to know, from the beginning, at least ONE employee somewhere was going to get sick. If they are willing to delay an additional month of going back to school the first time someone gets sick, this was never going to work and they shouldn't have blown smoke up our asses about returning to school in the beginning of october.

Signed,
Grumpy-ass grandpa that is sick of doing teachers jobs for them.

Social event - Ocean City. So I’ve heard.

so because a couple of teachers went to a bar in Ocean City (ok I really don’t know this part) we have to penalize 15,000+ students?! Grow a set school board! Kids need to be in school! NOW!

My bad this release doesn’t mention schools not reopening, but there is another press release stating schools not reopening till November now because of these few cases with teachers. BS!
