German court sentences journalist for meme

Talk about irony...or something. What else would you call it when you are fined and imprisoned for exercising freedom of speech by saying somebody in the government <checks the article> hates freedom of speech?

I'm beginning to think we dropped the bomb on the wrong Axis nation. Or not enough of them.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser sued over a picture that claimed she “hates freedom of expression”

A German district court has sentenced David Bendels, editor-in-chief of the conservative publication Deutschland-Kurier, to a suspended seven-month prison term for defaming Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser through a satirical meme.

The controversial meme, posted on Deutschland-Kurier’s X account in February 2024, showed Faeser holding a sign altered to read: “I hate freedom of expression.” The original photo featured the phrase “We Remember,” part of a Holocaust remembrance campaign. Faeser’s legal team filed a criminal complaint, which led to a fine and Monday’s sentencing by the Bamberg District Court in Upper Franconia, Bavaria.

At least he didn't body shame her or something, because the beaotch be so oogly, she could be twins; Ugh and Lee.

Germany has never changed. It went through being an occupied country, and it has emerged from the trials of WW2, but it's people haven't changed. They are still Aryans.

But she seems to have so many nasty expressions to mock. The fact that they stated it was satire is truly frightening. What happens if the publication is not German? This action could open her up to a lot of international ridicule.

Where even is the line between parody, satire, and reality anymore? I mean, we blew past the "truth is stranger than fiction" quite a while ago. And it's only gotten worse.

The thing is, I can totally see the US, and every other country in the world doing this kind of thing. Hell, UK is arresting and jailing people for pointing out factual information. So is Canada, and it probably happens more often in our country than we know.

The UK is also locking up people for praying silently. Nuts!!

If she had a little bit of self reflection, she might see that suing someone over a picture criticizing her attitude about “freedom of expression” set off all the alarms on the irony meter.

at the very least a judge should have been smart enough to see that.

Are you talking about the forums? Because you know that's a losing argument, even before it starts.

Naw. She thinks, we here in the US of A, operate under a democracy, and not a Republic. So many times, when the consequences of true democracy shows itself, as in the UK, the EU such as in Germany, I call her out. She's a closet democrat.

So, what, is it the sins of the father visited upon Germany ad infinitum?
Man....if there was only some way you could collect rent from her for all that time she has spent, living in your head, rent free...

Yoo too funny. :lmao: You mistake my replying opinion from someone's post as that person living in my head? I definitely do not obsess or think about any person beyond any topic at hand, regardless of who posted what.

Perhaps it is you that has me living in your head rent free? Seeing as you felt the need to postulate such an statement nearly a year later after that post?

Lots of the world thinks that, including here.

I had an interesting conversation at my friends funeral with a young lady from Ethiopia that was here getting some higher education, and she was with her host family. She told me that the UK was a much better place to live that the usa, I ****ing started laughing out loud.
I said do youself a favor before you move to the UK, go and visit for a few weeks and read there constitution and speach laws and then read ours, please get back to me.
She said that they were a democracy that was better than ours, with the numbers that had the most vote win.
I said that that is wonderful, but under a Constitutional Republic we all have a voice and the high population citys dont get to run the country here like they do in the UK.
I suggested that she go back home and work on those civil rights that she thought she had in Ethiopia, even more so with the 600,000 that have been murdered in the last 20 years in her homeland. If it was such a great place why are you here??
She asked about gun crime here in the US, I told her if we took all the guns away from the city dwellers and the democrates, gun crime her would be nothing, on a scale.
