Gestational Diabetes?

Club'nBabySeals

Where are my pants?
I went in for my 27 week appointment yesterday (and also got to do the first GD screening) and had gained 8 lbs since my appointment last month---a total of 20 lbs so far, and I'd started out at an average weight. My ultrasound said that the baby is measuring a tad over average (2 lbs, 12 oz. by their estimate).

My doctor was out doing a delivery, so I had to be seen by his Nurse/Midwife instead. There is nothing worse for your self esteem than having a 400 lb cow of a woman lay into you about excessive weight gain just before telling you that you probably have gestational diabetes. I've never left my doctor's office so upset before.

This is my first go at pregnancy, so I'm not sure what is "normal" for me. I've definitely plumped up this past month, but I'm certain that a good deal of it is associated with swelling (my ankles and feet are ginormous!).

Do any of you have experience with Gestational Diabetes? What is considered "normal" weight gain for being two trimesters in? :frown:

:huggy: I only gained 28 lbs during my pregnancy, but when I went in to drink the orange stuff, 1 out of the 3 readings was elevated. They thought it might be GD so I had to go back in for another test and again, 1 out of the 3 was elevated. They didn't put me on a formal regimine but told me to eat lots of fruits and vegetables and to cut back on portion size. It didn't help that all I craved were sweets, pie, pancakes with syrup, pop tarts, etc. Everything ended up just fine. If it is GD for you, your doctor will advise you on a nutrition plan for the remainder of your pregnancy. Good luck! :flowers:

Extra weight for you and the baby can be a sign of GD, but don't freak out about it now. It could be you just ate too much. It's early to be a serious problem and is very treatable. Stress is worse at this stage of the game.

Call and talk to your doctor. Not the nurse, insist on the doctor. Tell him about the "fat cow" (try not to call her that, though, you never know it could be his wife or something) and explain that you'd rather not deal with her if you can.

Is the orange stuff that bad? I have to go for my GD test in a few weeks.

When I was pregnant with my son, I was gestational diabetic. I had to go thru a series of tests. The syrup you have to drink is really gross, but you can handle it. I got to choose flavors, I believe that root beer was the best one. But I don't know if they still do that, my son is 20. Luckily, even though I was GD, I controlled it with diet. Cut out most sweets, switched to whole grain breads, concentrated on proteins instead of carbs. I gained 21 and a half pounds with him, he was 9 lbs when he was born. His sugar levels were low when he was born so for the first day he had a diet of sugar water...

My wife had GD for both of our kids. She was diet controlled for the first one, and insulin dependent for the second. There was no effect on either child. It's a hassle, but at least it usually goes away when the child is born.

The syrup is very gross. Make sure you take something to read or do. It's a long wait.

Same for me pretty much. Wife had it with both kids. First was controlled with diet. Second she had to take insulin. Little scare with a reaction to the insulin but nothing major. Didn't affect either kid. Second is a normal 13 yo which means he drives me absoltuely :jameo:

But....Wife now has diabetes. Doc said GD is "sometimes" pre-cursor for Type 2. So after kid is born healthy and happy make sure you continue checkups.

And when the fat cow gets on you about your weight again....just ask her how many cheeseburgers she had for lunch. Good luck.

I had the choice of lemon-lime and orange. I took the lemon-lime, it tasted like syrupy sprite. It wasn't too terrible. The waiting was worse than drinking that stuff. You'll do fine. :huggy:

Congratulations on your pregnancy! :yahoo:

Quote:While gestational diabetes is a cause for concern, the good news is that you and your health care team-your doctor, obstetrician, nurse educator, and dietitian-work together to lower your high blood glucose levels. And with this help, you can turn your concern into a healthy pregnancy for you, and a healthy start for your baby.

I had that when I was pregnant with my son. I have a history of diabetes in my family, so it's always been a concern for me.

By the end of my pregnancy, I had ballooned up to 250 pounds and was so bloated I had to wear slippers when I left the house:bawl:

My blood sugar leveled out immediatly after having my son, but I neer fully recovered from it.. I wound up with liver infection and 15 huge gall stones, I get faint if I don't eat all day and I have a tiny mark in my field of vision(diabetes affects your eye sight big time). I dropped almost 25 pounds of water and baby right after delivery, but since then, it's been HELL trying to lose anymore weight.
Keep an eye on your blood pressure and listen to the doctors, they aren't trying to be mean, but if you do have GD, it can cause a whole slew of trouble for you during and after your pregnancy.

I had GD w/ my son (he's 10 months old) and it was a little scary but not too bad. He had always measured big so when I was tested for GD the 1st time and it came back right on the border my doctor had me take the 2nd test. That one also came back border line but to be safe they labeled me w/ GD. I had to see a nutritionist who advised me on my diet, she gave me a book that explained everything from what to eat to where, I had to test my blood sugar 6 times a day in the beginning but was able to cut back after a few weeks. I only gained 25 pounds throughout my pregnancy but my son was 4.5 weeks early. He weighed 7.5 pounds and was perfectly healthy. Some say that GD increases your chances of preterm delivery and you also run the risk of your child being "larger then expected" so do your best to do what the doctor's say. As for the taste of the drink, it really is not anywhere as bad as what I had prepared myself for. My advice is to make sure it's cold (put it over ice if you need to) and try using a straw, it goes down much faster that way. You are allowed to drink water so take some w/ you. I had orange the 1st time and fruit punch the second, the fruit punch was better. The 1st test takes a little over an hour but the second is 3 hours so take some reading material, you'll need it!!! Good luck!!!
