Getting a laptop...

I'm thinking about an HP. Anyone hear of any problems or potential drawbacks with HP's?

What about Verizon Wireless (the card)?

whatever you do I recommend warranty! We purchased a Dell not too long ago, about a month after I had it, the power strip needed to be replaced, and then I started having problems with the LCD screen. I have an accidential warranty and a regular warranty on it. If I renew the regular, the accidential is free.

Good luck, my niece has a Toshiba from Best Buy, she's taken it back 6 times and they have not given her the best customer service either.

Buddy,
I have had a Sony Viao for the past year, the LCD screen is out on it and it's still covered under Sony's year warrantee. It's currently at Sony being repaired. I've pretty much switched over to a MAC PowerBook G4. I love my MAC, and would definitely suggest getting one. It's been a small adjustment switching over, but well worth it.

I also use the Verizon broadband card, which I pay around $50 a month unlimited. Another must way to go, because I can use my laptop with a good data connection virtually anywhere. For my PowerBook, I had to be at OSX software version 10.3.2 in order to install the Verizon software, but if you're buying new, you'll have 10.4.X.

My HP pavilion 6000 has had several problems. Been back to HP once and just this morning...no sound! Can't recommend one. Bought it back in Oct.

I've got an HP Pavilion laptop. Love it! No problems with it and it's 1.5 yrs old. I also have an HP desktop that is over 6 years old, still turn it on everyday. No problems. The only thing I would reccommend is to ask about which processor runs cooler. Mine in my laptop has a Turion64 processor and it's always more warm than I'd like. I have to keep a chillmat underneith it to make it comfortable to lay my wrists on. Other than that... not one problem.

Not sure you can network verizon wireless cards, so if you run more than one computer on a network, not sure!

Cool socks! lol Could you be running spysweeper in the background perhaps? I had that for awhile and it wouldn't let my computer shut down. I'd go to shut down and it would 'restart" instead. Nixed the spysweeper program and it corrected itself from forcing a shutdown.

That could be why it is not shutting down. However, that is not why the keyboard gets locked on caps lock and I cannot use the number keys when it happens. I have to reboot 3 or 4 times a day.

Not sure.. have you tried blasting canned air underneither your keys to get the crumbs out? I've found that when some of my keys won't respond, it's only a crumb or junk under the key, not letting it make contact. Just a thought.. Not that your keyboard is full of crumbs, but it doesn't take much at all to jam up a key or two.

I would not go w/HP. I've had nothing but problems with mine. The first one I bought went after 3 months where it would just shut down because it was getting no connection from the power adapter. When you call the HP Technical Service, I don't think you are talking or calling anybody in the US because they are very difficult to understand. After the 3rd time (in less then 1 year) of being sent back to HP Repair Center for the same problem, I had to call the HP Corporation where they actually assigned me a Case Worker because it was ridiculous dealing w/the Tech Service people. They sent me a ZV6000, which I think was refurbished - it's a little better then the other model I had, but the Disc Drive and Power Adapter recently went on it and it's no longer covered under warrently - so I just purchased a new adapter for it because it not worth fixing the disc drive.

I too have the same problem where it does not power down - I usually just have to hold the Power button down to shut it off.

I would never buy a HP laptop again.

You should be running a chill mat under ANY laptop you own, overheating is a common problem in laptops and despite the name, you really shouldn't have them sitting on your lap. They need to be on flat surfaces and well ventilated, just like a PC. Also, AMDs have a tendency to run hotter naturally, I think its because they run flow point checks or whatever they're called more often than Intels.

I recommend HP to anyone who asks, as right now they're one of the leading providers on the market, but take my advice and cover your butt. Go somewhere where they offer extended warranties that cover things like accidental damage, power surges, screen replacement, etc. Staples has some great plans you can buy in either 2 or 3 year lengths.

DONT by a Dell or Gateway/EMachine, Acers have a lot of problems with their motherboards and ram, Compaqs are decent, but because they're owned and made by HP, they're the lower end of the spectrum performance wise. Toshiba has a couple nice ones that just recently came out, Macs are made for multimedia so unless you're doing a lot of video/audio/graphics work, no point in waisting the money on them(not to say they're not decent machines, they're just not built for the average user).

Im running an HP laptop with an AMD turion processor and I use my verizon wifi card everyday for work. The laptop works great and the price from Circuit City rocked. I have had to fix several new dell laptops lately so I do not recommend though. If you have the funds I would recommend a lenovo laptop T61 or something comparable.
