I'm not sure if this song is one of the most covered songs ever, but it's been done by a boatload of people (in no particular order). Here are most of the ones you can find on youtube:

The gay version (Tom Jones):

What? You've never heard of Duane Eddy?

Doh!

Good catch. I saw them in passing, but forgot. Thanks.

Cadillac Angels has a version; on "16 Tons of Twang," I think.

If this don't give you a stiffy, nothing will:

Unfortunately, this one is truncated...I really like this version:

Pretty good bluegrass version:

A really strange, but thoroughly recognizable version:

I'm still astounded at the breadth and depth of singers and groups who've recorded this song in just about every genre one might think of. Still, it's got to be the height of something when Lawrence Welk does a version.

I hadta do it...I din' wanna did it, but I hadta....

Okay, 2 more versions, and that's it. I promise. I was looking for Dick Dale, but a search turned up zip for GRITS. Stumbled on this one by accident.

Also Dick Dale and the Deltones, probably from the late 60s, early 70s. Not sure.

Okay, that's it. There are a bunch more versions by Brenda Lee, the Ventures, the Shadows (pop/almost disco sounding), and a lot more. Like I said, I don't know if it's the most covered song there is, but it's got to be up there in the top 10.
