Giant to Merge with Stop & Shop

I'm a Senior AIX Unix Sysadm for Giant. Not sure what's gonna happen with my job or the jobs of the gang that does my type job up at Stop and Shop.

I have some C and Perl experience as a programmer from a previous position with Giant and a couple years experience on their help desk (worked my way up).

Anyone looking for a hardworking computer nerd? Send me a PM and I'll shoot you my resume.

Apologies to those that think this plea might be tacky, but I figured what the heck?

Do you work in the Landover office? My husband works there as a buyer! Small world!

No, Giant is actually OPENING five more stores in the Washington area between now and the end of the year, with plans to build and open about 15 a year after that. Pretty aggressive growth, but it means that they (Ahold) need to economize everywhere that they can, and that includes cutting back on office staff by combining the managment and support services between grocery chains.

Unfortunately for me, that might mean I'll get laid off. :bawl: Oh well, I've been thinking that the grass might be greener someplace else for a while now. Guess it might be high time to find out.

Merger

I saw this 2 or 3 days ago on the news and wondered how much luck he was having with finding something else. On the news it said mostly just the HR staff and such would be effected not necessary the stores themselves.

Husband's thoughts exactly! He's been miserable there for a while now...things just aren't the same as they used to be.

Right, silly - he isn't in the stores, therefore it's very likely that he could be affected. :bubble:

you know

you know thats just a shame. it just goes to show you that your worthless to the big business men. after all of the years that some of these people have worked and they are just going to get fired. the same thing happened with Superfresh. i worked at the one in leonardtown and it sucked that i lost my job but i was only 17 and it wasnt like it was my career. i kinda felt sorry for the older people that had been with the company for a long time. poor them and poor everyone who works gets canned for working for nothing.

You're right BL, but it's also the way things go sometimes. While I'm facing a layoff, I also understand that the business cycle has turned such that mega companies like Wal Mart are what every corporation strives for.

While the companies might not really want to hurt their people after so many years of good service, it makes no sense to keep doing things the way they've always done it and wait for the bigger chains to eat you up. I'm sure that Shoppers understands this, they just haven't hit that crossroad yet. It's coming, I'm certain.

That's why I just try to keep this stuff in perspective. I work for the Lord first, my family second, and things like career and self are a little further down the list. It keeps stuff like this from getting me too upset.

Meanwhile the economy is picking up and jobs are being created. If I'm going to be laid off it will take several months between making the decision and then integrating the two chains together. In the meanwhile I should be able to find an even better job. Hopefully the others here at the office will have the same experience as well. We'll see.

Don't feel bad guys. I was laid off from two defense contracting jobs in three years because of defense budget cuts, and my sister has been laid off twice in two years and she's a polymer scientist. It happens to everybody.
