It's not that serious
I know I KNOW not another question... sorry

We're packing out next week and I'm trying to figure out what to keep and what to sell...

So tell me EVERYTHING you know about this housing area... kitchen size... bedroom size... yard size... is there a seperate living and dining room... is there a bike path nearby... is there a swimming pool nearby... do I need a lawnmower... can I grow a garden... how much storage space will I have...which appliances are provided??? We're getting a 2 bedroom unit.

Thanks :)

Do yourself a favor and buy a house or townhouse. Your just throwing your money away by living in base housing. If your going to get your BAH/BAS anyway, at least put it towards a mortgage and walk away from Pax River with $100K in your pocket. Sack-up, both of your may need to work, but it'll be worth it in the end.

I lived there in the late 80's when Glenn Forest was brand new. We had a huge 4-bdrm, 2.5 bath unit that was great, considering that the last two military housing places we lived in got condemned and torn down. The master bdrm in our unit was enormous. The vanity sink was seperated from the tub/toilet by a door and a huge walk-in closet sat opposite the sink area. This was unlike the 3-brdm units that weren't quite as spacious. I have no idea what the 2-bdrm units looked like.

Now, since my info is almost 20 years old (as are the units) I have no idea what they are like today, or if they've been remodeled. There was a bike/walking path that went around the entire housing neighborhood and quite a few playgrounds in different areas. Even though it was landscaped, I planted a few bulbs and flowers, as did most people who maintained their yards. Each court had someone designated to keep the (military owned) lawnmower and you pitched in a buck for gas when you borrowed it.

All appliances were included except washer/dryer. We had a nice big laundry room that could be entered from the hallway and exited thru the garage. We had a country kitchen, and the dining room was off the other side, joining the living room.

It was a nice place to live back then and I'd be interested in hearing what it's like today. The kids wanted to go visit their "old house" years ago, but when we got there it had been fenced and a gate guard was added so we couldn't go in.

Thanks but I have a 2 year old who I am interested in raising instead of having someone else do it for me . We've looked into buying in the area and it just isn't something that's going to work for us right now. I'm not interested in hearing about how I'll be throwing my money away... I know that, but if I want to stay home with our son it's our only option right now. I'll look more into the housing market when we arrive...though, I'm not into buying a house sight unseen anyhow.

Thank you, I have... but their hours are wonky and I've had to get up at 4am to get someone to answer the line (HAWAII time is a bit different than you guys).. and the woman at the office wasn't a wealth of information either :). I thought I could get some info from people who actually lived there, guess I was wrong :).

Hopefully someone from Glen Forest will see your post soon. Have you checked out www.lincolnmilitary.com/patuxentriver? They're the private company that took over base housing. The pictures of the houses shown under the "picture" section are not Glen Forest, but you may find something useful on this site. Good luck, and hang in there!

I lived In Glen Forest in the 80's too. I was in my teens. It was brand new back then and really nice. The places are duplexes, but ours was a big 4 bedroom on Kalmia Way. (last street on the right all the way at the back) It had a small backyard with a privacy fence. The living room was seperate from the kitchen and dining room. All rooms were big enough and the master bedroom was HUGE. Playgrounds everywhere, a bike trail and lots of kids for the kids to play with.

I lived in Glenn Forrest in 91-92. Do you know for sure that is the housing you are getting? There are numerous different developments on the base. Glenn Forrest is the only off base housing at this point and is about 1.5 to 2 miles from the base.

I had a two bedroom unit on Ironwood Way. It has a garage one car will fit an average size car or suv. When you enter the foyer there is a closet, half bath and the door to the garage on one side and the entry into the dining room will be up a few feet on the other side. The dining room is small an okay size for a table for 4 and chairs. They used to have this long hanging light that wouldn't quite center over the table so watch your head if there still there :lol.

The kitchen is off the dinig room and is a galley kitchen. One side has the refridge sink and dishwasher. The other size has the stove. (if i remember correctly) at the back of the kitchen us the laundry room and I believe a door that exits onto the patio. The washer and dryer hookups are all we had so you'll need a W & D.

Back out and to the entry area just go forward into the living room which is huge. This an odd shaped room as it is incredibly long. You will have double windows on the back wall and a single glass paned door to the patio.

A big, big thing is that the entire downstairs in a white speckled linoleum (at least it used to be) most purchased carpets from Lowe's with the padding attached to put in the LR.

Back to the hallway you have the stairs about six up a landing turn and I think for or five more steps. At the top of the stairs to the left you'll have the 2nd bedroom the master is to the right and looks out to the fenced area out back.

There is one full bath on the top floor in between the two bedrooms and a huge closet that I literally turned into a makeshift third room that was so big a double bed and a night table fit in it.

There were good sized closets in the two bedroom and both were good sized although I don't think as big as in the 3 + bedroom units.

You have a small fenced in yard and I mean small . I had a patio table chairs and a gas grill on the slab and a small patch of grass. We did not have a community mower when I lived there. We had bought our own.

You might be able to have a very small garden out back and then plant flowers in the front. There were I believe 4-6 units attached to eachother. I had a inner unit so if you end up with a end unit you'll have more yard on the side out of the fencing and maybe another window or two.

Hope I was able to help. Good Luck with your move.
