In a move sure to spark outrage, the White House announced today that GM and Chrysler must cease participation in NASCAR at the end of the 2009 season if they hope to receive any additional financial aid from the government. Companies around the globe—Honda and Audi, to name two—have drawn down racing operations, and NASCAR itself has already felt the pinch in the form of reduced team spending. A complete withdrawal from America’s premier racing series is expected to save more than $250 million between GM and Chrysler, a substantial amount considering the drastic measures being

April Fools joke?

Yeah it is. And a very bad one at that.

Sirius-XM was having a field day with this on Sirius Speedway this morning. My people have told me this report just isn't true.

APril Fools or not, it makes sense. Everyone was in an uproar when the AIG execs were going to get their bonuses totalling what 65 Million.. how much do GM and Chrysler spend on NASCAR a year..

Fair is fair, and turnaround is fair play..

If it was bad for AIG execs to get paid 'frivolously', what could be more frivolous than spending money on NASCAR?

It must be true considering the number of threads talking about it...:jameo:

 Sorry! I looked in the section that seemed most logical and saw nothing. Who'd have thought to look for it in the political section? :jet:

Racecars are the only thing people are buying from GM right now. In fact, it's probably the only profitable thing GM has going on right now. And it goes far beyond NASCAR. So go on back to the politics thread and talk about what you think you know about.

Beaver, it won't be Obammie that pulls the plug on GM and NASCAR - it will be the bankruptcy judge. Here is an excerpt of an article for you to ponder:

If GM were to file bankruptcy tomorrow, the fallout would be tremendous. All contracts GM has agreed to suddenly are frozen. The bankruptcy court can cancel them if it so desires. This effectively means any supplier to GM or these teams is going to be worried about not being paid. In such a situation, all the Chevrolet teams will face a credit crisis. The hope would be that NASCAR would step in and provide a guarantee of payment, but there are no clear indications NASCAR is in a position to do that.

Most people can't picture GM actually being liquidated, but you should open your eyes. The company is not going through a bump in the road, it is going through a major bloodletting. A company that loses $30 billion dollars a year before the current recession hit [2006] doesn't need a "little help". It has fatal flaws.

A more reasonable guess of the outcome of any GM bankruptcy would be the company would be broken up into smaller pieces and sold off - a great American institution put out of its misery. If this comes to be, the NASCAR season is going to be a disaster with half the teams suddenly having no cars and parts. What a mess.

And, just to be fair, here is the link so that you may read the whole article if you desire:

What Happens to NASCAR If GM Files Bankruptcy?

Bottom line is, if GM is forced to liquidate, the judge may pull the plug on the sponsorship. Even if the judge allows it to continue, where does GM get the spare parts from if the suppliers are out of business?

Which racecar is it exactly, that everyone is driving on 235 with the bowtie on the front??

The same one at Daytona that had the bowtie, and Ford Emblem and the Toyota emblem on the front? THAT racecar?

Or are you suggesting that people that watch NASCAR are stupid enough to believe that they can go to their dealers and get the car they saw on the TV last Sunday?? I'll give them a little more credit than that.. hell I even have friends that watch NASCAR..

I'm talking about late model chasis, super late model chasis, asphalt late model, modified, modified outlaw, supertruck, pro mod, dragster, late model trucks, etc.

They have racing programs like this all over the country. Every Friday Night at Potomac Speedway, Saturday Nights at Old Dominion Speedway.

There's more to racing than just NASCAR.

Like I said Bob, stick to talking about what you think you know about.
