Going to a Dance

A) Well, the wife wanted to go to a dance.. There was supposed to be an outside band at Toots. Warning signs that should have made me turn around: 1. Only six cars in the parking lot on a Saturday night. 2. A friend who knows all of the bands that have been in the County said she never heard of them. 3. Loud as heck to cover for how bad they were. - I could hear them over a mile away. 4. No one was sitting any where near the band. 5. No one was dancing. 6. Only recognized one song. 7. We couldn't recognize the words to most of the songs he tried to sing. - Left early.

B) Last Drop - No band. Just a DJ. No one there. Only three cars on a Saturday night. Also loud for some reason. - Left early from here too.

C) Sea Breeze - Repeat paragraph A. Outside band is a plus. A few more cars there. Maybe a dozen. However, no songs were recognizable. I couild hear it from Calvert County across the river. And of course all of the people were sitting as far back away from the band as possible. Many people arrived and left while we were there.

What I learned - It seems like various bars try to find a cheap rot gut band that won't cost them very much for a Saturday night. You get what you pay for. I remember years ago there used to be some great bands. Not so much anymore. Potomac Gardens advertises some good bands every so often. And they do. Typically there is a ten dollar or so cover charge for a "good" band. But, for a good band, it is worth it. However, not to say that Potomac Gardens doesn't have BFM. (Bar Fly Music). That's true. They do. But, at least a person can understand the words at the Potomac Garden, most of the time.

There are good bands out there. The local bars simply don't want to fork out the money for them. They go the cheapest way possible to save a buck and attempt to supposedly bring in customers. One thing for sure - South Sandgates Road is a crazy road to drive down. No wonder why it is posted 35.

BFM defined - Music that is good to listen to but not very much that anyone would dance to.

Not sure what your music genre is, but The Reagan Years is an awesome, fun eighties cover band. Great singers, high energy. Saw them at the Tiki Bar this summer.

We used to have some great bands at Swann's back in the day....and routinely would pack the place to the Fire Marshall's limit too. Different times...30 years ago...

We were on the big island last night (Solomons) and had a drink at Charles Street, where they had a piano player like they usually do. Very soothing but not dancing music. When we left there, we could hear the band playing at the Tiki Bar/Grill - not sure if people were dancing there. Then on the board walk opposite the Lighthouse was a guy playing music - didn't see anyone dancing there either. And we then passed BugEye where we could hear some live music coming from their backyard bar. So there were lots of music options on the island last night, but not sure any of them were dancing tunes and it was difficult to find parking.

There's square dancing at the Loffler Center. Plenty of parking too.

My old buddy Ben is always playing somewhere on that small island (Solomons).

That's a lot of it, times have changed. And if they hadn't I wonder if 3Cat would want to go someplace with a bunch of 20-something what-passes-as-hipsters down here.

I'm too damned old to go bar hopping any longer and last call for me would be 9:30.

Simple, don't drive down S. Sandgates Road. Go down N. Sandgates Road. Easy peasy.

That's really good to know. Thank you!
