good daycare for kids w/special needs?

I have a 3yo who is fairly delayed (functioning at about 18mos) and may have autism. He is currently at a daycare that is VERY good with him...but, given that he will now be getting therapy 4 days/week, it's not in a good location for DH and I to leave work and drop him off/pick him up every day. If there's nothing better, or at least *as* good, we will obviously leave him there, for his sake, but something closer to the base than Rte 4 would be VERY helpful. It would also keep him in the GHES district for when he starts preschool this fall (right now he is on the GHES/BES line - so, even though we live south of the base, he might actually end up going to Banneker).

Suggestions would be helpful...

Are you looking for a daycare center type place? Home daycare provider? What about a nanny who work would out of your own home?

We have him in a center, but would consider just about anything that will work for him. We've had bad luck with nannies in the past, though, and, since he's nonverbal, I hesitate to keep him with someone alone all day (except for when he's at therapy). We also have to keep in mind the daily transportation requirement :-/, and that he probably benefits from social interactions with children his own age - whether that's chronological or functional age.

foxxynhounds, if I was the parent of a child who was "(functioning at about 18mos) and may have autism," I'd get suggestions from the therapist(s) who work with him. They know him and his needs. I'd listen to them.

Have you asked for suggestions from the team members that evaluated your son? I'd listen to what they have to say, too.

I hope my ideas help you to do what's best for your son.
He has my best wishes for a bright future.

I'm having a complete brain fart, but the school in Hollywood that does the Christmas tree sales should have a listing. I know that they do autism therapy.

The Judy Center at Green Holly might be an option in August. If the school determines therapy (speech, OT, PT) will benefit your child academically, the services can be arranged during school hours. The summer staff at school can point you in the right direction if you think this is an option. The Green Holly link, through the SMCPS web page, has a brochure with some information.

he already gets services through infants and toddlers and will go to preschool at green holly this fall. they do not feel that he needs the same level of services that we do, though, which is why we have intensive private therapies in place. and i think the judy center is income based, so i dont think we'd qualify for that.
