Since this is the day we choose to commemorate the day on which Christ was crucified, I thought I'd post a few things not widely publicised, that I was taught as a kid.

  • It is believed that Christ was approximately 33 years old when he was crucified
  • People believe He died at approximately 3 p.m.
  • The Roman centurions tore up Jesus' "Coat of Many Colors" and gambled for possession of the pieces
  • The veil in the temple that separated the sanctuary from the Holy of Holies room was torn from top to bottom at the moment of Christ's death

That's why I posted them. As with all things related to this topic, some folks would dispute any of them, but they're what I was taught.

Your are right about the approximate age of Jesus. It can be deduced from Jewish history. We know when He was born and under whose reign He was crucified. After that, it is just math. The time of the crucifixion is a matter of record as is the veil being torn and the casting of lots or gambling for Jesus' tunic. But not quite right about the coat of many colors or it being torn. The coat of many colors was Joseph in the Old Testament. Here are the Bible passages.
Mark 15:24-39

24And they crucified Him, and divided up His garments among themselves, casting lots for them to decide what each man should take.

25It was the third hour when they crucified Him.

26The inscription of the charge against Him read, "THE KING OF THE JEWS."

27They crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left.

28[And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "And He was numbered with transgressors."]

29Those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,

30save Yourself, and come down from the cross!"

31In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, "He saved others; He cannot save Himself.

32"Let this Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!" Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

33When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour.

34At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" which is translated, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"

35When some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, "Behold, He is calling for Elijah."

36Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down."

37And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last.

38And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

39When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"
Genesis 37:2-4
2These are the records of the generations of Jacob. Joseph, when seventeen years of age, was pasturing the flock with his brothers while he was still a youth, along with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives And Joseph brought back a bad report about them to their father.

3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a varicolored tunic.

4His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers; and so they hated him and could not speak to him on friendly terms.
The seamless tunic was the piece of Jesus' clothing that was gambled for.
John 19:23-25

23Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece. 24So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be"; this was to fulfill the Scripture: "THEY DIVIDED MY OUTER GARMENTS AMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CAST LOTS."

25Therefore the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
Just thought since we are posting about the ultimate Truth the record should be straight.

The important part is this is the day many Christians celebrate that the God of all creation chose to die for us to be the final sacrifice for our sins. He rose from the dead three days later as a promise to us of eternal life if we just accept Him as Savior and Lord believing and having faith in God.

OOPS! Sorry about the confusion regarding the coat, 2A. I'm ashamed about my poor memory. Thanks for setting it straight - and may you also have a blessed weekend!
