GOP base people...

...Rush Limbaugh says that if McCain picks a pro choice veep he's gonna lose because the base will revolt.

I've been saying for weeks that he ain't getting the base anyway and that the only way he wins is by getting lots of moderates and independents, keeping up that Maverick image he's long built that they like and, obviously, being pro choice is something they are OK with and even prefer.

It's just odd hearing Limbaugh essentially tell McCain, who the base has NEVER been with, that he better throw 'em a bone or they (we) REALLY won't be with him.

So, base'ers, I thought I knew the answer to this, but, are you with McCain if his veep is pro life and not with him if he goes pro choice?

Also, I will enjoy our resident lefties either telling me I am wrong, thus they agree with Limbaugh :yikes: OR I get to enjoy our resident lefties telling me I am right :diva: and that they disagree with Limbaugh.

So, is the McCain veep person to be, specifically their views on abortion, really that huge for you, us?

As a registered republican of 20 years i can honestly say that it wont matter to me at all. Abortion has never been one of my pet issues, and i have found the anti-abortion crowd to be even bigger zealots than the pro or anti gun crowds anyday

I believe the "base" will turn out for McCain regardless because the idea of an Obama presidency is horrific to them.

I'm not a base Republican - I only like them if they do what I want. At the end of the day, McCain will still be President, so who is VP is has no bearing on whether I will vote for him or not.

It's rare to have a sitting President die or resign.

Being an independant, it might help except that for me Liberman is not on the issues I am. He wins points for the enviroment but loses for Iraq and Abortion.

But if the 'base' isn't going to vote for Mccain and Mccain is pretty much tied with Oabama, who exactly IS saying they will vote for him? Maybe the 'base' is either a lot smaller or more left leaning than they used to be?

In My Opinion
I dont know who the "Base" is. But solely as a strategy, if he picks Lieberman, he'll trounce Obama.
I listen to America Left on XM every morning on the way into work, judging from the conversations between Cenk and the callers, you might be wrong about Lieberman being a strong choice of McCain.
the general opinion, on that show, is that Lieberman is a traitor to his party, Cenk was commenting that Lieberman ran with Gore as a dem, figured that that didnt work so switched to independent so he could try running with a Republican. Cenk called him an opportunist, the callers all stepped in line.

In order for either candidate to win, they will have to pull votes from the other side, If Lieberman is truly that repulsive to the liberals, it might be all it takes for them not to jump sides.

This being said, I have no idea how representative that show is of the whole democratic mindset.
