Ronna McDaniel tries to level Charlie Kirk, only to be felled herself

McDaniel’s poorly picked battle began when she appeared on Fox with Brian Kilmeade. Kilmeade asked how she felt about Dhillon’s campaign, which is predicated on the claim that it’s time for new leadership at the RNC. McDaniel returned with the obvious “dis”: “Yeah, you know she is a good attorney, but she’s never run a state party. She’s never run a campaign.”

That was an interesting response from someone whose greatest skill seems to be spending money. It got worse when Kilmeade pointed out that, while the big-money backers (who clearly don’t mind the waste) support McDaniel, a straw poll at a Turning Point event showed young people going for Dhillon.

McDaniel led with a strongish argument: Dhillon was a speaker at the event, and Turning Point had endorsed her. In other words, it was a biased poll. But then McDaniel decided not just to go after Dhillon or a biased poll, she attacked Turning Point itself:

And I just I’m going to say something about Turning Point. You know they do great conferences. How many young voters did they register? How many youth voters turned out this cycle? How about the college kids in Arizona where they’re headquartered?
You know if you’re going to hold the RNC accountable, start looking at these outside organizations that don’t disclose their finances and ask them what they did.
And this is a group that’s taken over the youth vote, they’ve taken over college campuses and they need to be held accountable, but this is Turning Point and Harmeet trying to take over the RNC.

Romney Says He Didn’t Trust GOP-Controlled House To Craft A Budget

Republican Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah said Thursday that he backed a $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill because he did not trust House Republicans to handle crafting a budget in light of Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California’s difficult campaign for speaker of the House.

“House Republicans say that they want to craft a budget, but they haven’t yet been able to select a speaker,” Romney said, referencing the fact that several House Republicans came out in opposition to McCarthy’s bid for speaker. Romney noted it would be very difficult to sort out budgets for the current fiscal year and the following fiscal year.

“Even if they could take on those two things at the same time, it would need Democrats in the Senate to pass it,” Romney said, claiming that the resulting compromise legislation would end up at a higher number than the $1.7 trillion in the bill. Romney noted that entitlement spending was twice the amount of the omnibus bill.

Federalist Editor Goes Scorched Earth on Mitch McConnell

Hemingway delivers a thorough and detailed case for why it’s time to move on from the Kentucky Republican, who is a fixture on the Hill. It goes beyond the failed 2022 cycle, and it’s not loaded with the platitudinous claim that he’s not conservative enough, which is a Tea Party throwback swipe. The Federalist editor gave much praise for what McConnell has done well, keeping the filibuster from being nuked, confirming a trove of Donald Trump’s judicial nominees, and being, for the most part, a legislative grim reaper for liberal initiatives. Now, the latter accolade has slipped, and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has regained the upper hand in the war over the judiciary (via The Federalist):

The Kentucky Republican claimed giving more money to Ukraine is “the No. 1 priority for the United States right now, according to most Republicans.” The new $1.7 trillion Democrat spending bill he enthusiastically supports would give Ukraine another roughly $45 billion in assistance, bringing the total over the past eight months to more than $100 billion, a staggering figure even if it weren’t happening during a time of inflation, looming recession, and other serious domestic problems.
The comment about Republican priorities is so false as to be completely delusional. Among the many concerns Republican voters have with Washington, D.C., a failure to give even more money to Ukraine simply does not rank.
A large coalition of conservative groups, including the Heritage Foundation and the Conservative Partnership Institute, publicly opposed ramming through more Ukraine support during the lame-duck session before Republicans take over control of the House on Jan. 3, 2023. Strong pluralities and majorities of Republicans have told pollsters they want decreases, not increases, in foreign spending and global military involvement.
Many Republican voters support helping Ukraine fight Russia’s unjust invasion, but it is absolutely nowhere near their top issue, contrary to McConnell’s false claim.

Jim Jordan Puts Biden Admin on Notice for Refusing to Comply With Doc Requests

One of the letters sent out on Tuesday was to White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain, who was contacted on November 18, 2022 for follow-up with regards to a letter from by October 17, 2022 and from June 14, 2022. The letters came from Jordan when he was then the ranking member, as well as other Republican members. The November 18 letter detailed how the members "have made several requests for information and documents concerning the Biden Administration’s misuse of federal criminal and counterterrorism resources to target concerned parents at school board meetings," with the subsequent letter repeating the request for such information.

Klain's letter is particularly significant in that it references noteworthy behavior from the White House late last year. On December 29, 2022, Richard Sauber, Special Counsel to the president, submitted a letter to Jordan declining to comply with requests. Even more telling is that the letter was leaked to POLITICO beforehand.

House Republican Introduces Bill to Ban Federal Funding for EcoHealth Alliance

The Defund EcoHealth Alliance Act would prevent any federal funds from being “made available for any purpose” to EcoHealth Alliance, including subgrant or subcontract organizations or individuals.

It would also require the Comptroller General of the United States to review the amount of federal funds awarded to EcoHealth Alliance directly or indirectly in the past ten years that were provided purposely or inadvertently to the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese Communist Party and the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The study would also focus on any funds awarded to any other lab, agency or organization that is located in any foreign nation or is owned or controlled by the CCP or WIV.

John Kennedy Stumps Biden Judicial Nominee With Questions About the Constitution

Bjelkengren got her Juris Doctor from Gonzaga University School of Law.

"Judge, tell me what Article V of the Constitution does?" Kennedy asked.

"Article V is not coming to mind at the moment," Bjelkengren replied after a long pause.

"How about Article II?" Kennedy followed up.

"Neither is Article II," said Bjelkengren.

Bjelkengren said in her many years of experience in the judicial system in Washington state, she never had to deal with the legal concept of purposivism, which Kennedy said she will have to deal with it should she be confirmed to the federal position.

Article V outlines the process to add amendments to the the Constitution and Article II lays out the rules on who is eligible to be president of the United States. Students are typically taught about the makeup of the Constitution in grades 4 through 8.

Kennedy is a slick old bird. When you are going to be interviewed by him you had better be prepared. So far not one of them has been?

Lets be honest now. Last time we put them in charge with one friken job, killing Obama care, or at least making it less stupid, they acted like they didn't have a plan, and the whole thing went down in flames. So I'll give Mitt this, he's not wrong to doubt these clowns.

Eric Burlison files his first legislation in Congress, attempting to repeal 1930s gun law

U.S. Rep. Eric Burlison filed his first legislation as a freshman member of Congress this week, aimed at stripping out gun regulations approved in the 1930s.

The southwest Missouri Republican's "Repeal the NFA Act" would remove requirements under federal law to pay a $200 tax, register and undergo an application process to own certain firearms and accessories, including shotguns, rifles with certain length barrels, machine guns, and mufflers and silencers.

"The federal government has used the National Firearms Act for almost a century to violate law-abiding citizens’ Second Amendment rights," Burlison said in a statement announcing the bill. "The recent ATF pistol brace rule is just another example of these blatant attacks on the constitutional rights of Americans. The ATF-NFA sham needs to end."

Burlison's bill comes a month after the U.S. Department of Justice submitted a new federal rule requiring stabilizing braces and other accessories, used to convert pistols into short-barreled rifles, to follow federal laws that govern those types of weapons, including the 1934 law. He has also co-sponsored legislation that would abolish the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, or ATF.

New House panel will use subpoena power to expose 'truth' of DOJ targeting parents, Elise Stefanik says

The new weaponization of government panel is "absolutely" prepared to issue subpoenas to expose "corruption" in federal agencies as it launches a range of investigations, including into the Department of Justice 's efforts to criminalize protesters at school board meetings, according to the House GOP conference chairwoman.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), a newly appointed member to the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, said Republicans will demand transparency from the Biden administration and will use the power of the majority to compel documents and testimony.

“Absolutely," Stefanik told the Washington Examiner when asked about speedy subpoenas. "I anticipate there will be subpoenas, not just from this select subcommittee but from many of the agencies that have refused to comply with document requests."

Stefanik continued, "We will fight for transparency and accountability and shining sunlight on the corruption in these federal agencies, and it is telling that already the Democrats and the Biden administration and Joe Biden himself are trying to stonewall our efforts to access information. These agencies work for the American people, not the other way around.”

Mitch McConnell Retaliates Against GOP Dissenters Sens. Rick Scott, Mike Lee

Further lending credibility to the retaliation theory, McConnell also pulled Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) from the Commerce Committee. Lee supported Scott’s bid to oust McConnell at the time.

“People told me not to run for Republican Leader against Mitch McConnell. They said I wouldn’t win. I knew it was going to be hard. But we’ve got to start somewhere,” Scott said in an ad released in early January.

“We are on the road to woke socialism and Republicans are just a speed bump,” he added. “We can’t keep doing the same old thing. It’s time for Republicans to be bold, speak the truth, and stop caving in. Help us change our party. Join us at RescueAmerica.com.”

McConnell said that he did not take the bid to ouster him personally, but “The latest move sends a clear message to conservatives that challenging McConnell’s leadership carries a cost,” according to The Hill,

The Georgia Republican invoked Rep. Eric Swalwell’s (D-Calif.) purported dalliance with suspected Chinese honeytrap Christine Fang, aka Fang Fang, after the California Democrat made a bawdy joke at the expense of Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.), who has spent the week passing out AR-15-shaped lapel pins to pro-Second Amendment House members.

“Why is it so small?” Swalwell said in a tweet aimed at Clyde, who showed off the pins Thursday in a video posted on the social media platform.

To which Greene responded: “Questions only Fang Fang can answer.”

GOP Rep Shreds Biden's State of the Union in Less Than Three Minutes

The address was a left-wing dumpster fire, with Biden mocking the oil and gas industry, pushing a tax agenda that will suck businesses dry, and peppered with bouts of anger. The economy is back, with 12 million new jobs being created under Joe and a record reduction in the deficit. It brings a whole new definition to the word ‘fugazi.’ It’s shocking that days after a Chinese spy balloon breached US airspace, the Biden White House is doing Chinese math on the economic data.

And that’s where Greene continued to torch the president. Before the State of the Union, she paraded around Cannon holding a white balloon with the caption, “It’s just an innocent balloon.” After the address, Greene mentioned that the Chinese spy balloon incursion was something that Biden never addressed or apologized for, adding that he’s too weak to protect American national interests. She eviscerated the speech and this administration in under three minutes, saying, “either he [Biden] doesn’t know what he’s talking about, or he’s just flat-out lying.”

One of those lies centered on the GOP scheme to cut Social Security and Medicare, which Greene denied, along with a host of congressional Republicans last night. Also, what was that tangent about non-compete contracts impacting cashiers at fast food establishments? Is that at the core of our economic recession, Joe? Also, hidden hotel fees aren’t a top domestic priority either. This administration is and has never been able to pinpoint, address, and resolve a crisis ever. The balloon fiasco was just another chapter in this long and predictable history of incompetence that engulfs this administration.

Tulsi Gabbard Rips Mitt Romney Apart During Hearing

I don’t care what one may think of Gabbard’s foreign policy views, what Romney did was disgusting and childish. It showed that some US senators apparently have a level of maturity that my seven-year-old would surpass. It is not “treasonous” for an American citizen to opine about a foreign war that doesn’t even directly involve the United States. To use that kind of language was ridiculous and defamatory, even if Gabbard being a public figure would make pursuing a lawsuit pointless.

The word “treason” is often bastardized by figures on both sides, but it has an actual definition. It means to provide aid and comfort to an enemy nation that the United States is at war with. Making a comment about the existence of bio-labs (which is what most assume Romney was referencing) is not offering aid and comfort, and last I checked, the United States is not at war with Russia.

Romney’s goal was clear: He wanted to quell Gabbard’s speech by accusing her of a crime punishable by death. Of course, Gabbard served and continues to serve in the military. Romney has never worn the uniform. That’s not to say you must have served to criticize someone who has, but it is to say that you probably shouldn’t be accusing someone who put their money where their mouth is of treason. You’d think a US senator could have that basic level of decency.

The senator from Utah is a big talker when he’s facing right-leaning ideological opponents (a place Gabbard apparently resides now, at least partially). He’ll cause a scene over George Santos or trash Tulsi Gabbard, but he’s nowhere to be found when Republicans need a champion to stand up to the harmful excesses of the left. In other words, Romney is the worst kind of politician. He’s a spineless former Democrat who seeks affirmation from the mainstream media over accomplishing anything substantial for the party he claims to represent. I’d take one Tulsi Gabbard over 10 Mitt Romneys.

'Two FBIs': Whistleblowers accuse DC HQ of trampling Constitution, field offices

Minority Democrats deemed the subcommittee itself a threat to the safety and integrity of law enforcement, arguing GOP rhetoric provoked a "dirty bomb" threat against the FBI after its raid on former President Trump's Mar-a-Lago. Majority Republicans pointed to their November staff report on FBI whistleblowers and the Justice Department's politicization.

They also disagreed sharply on the nature of parent-led protests against school boards that prompted Attorney General Merrick Garland's explosive memo about "domestic terrorism."

The partisan dynamics carried over from Wednesday's House Oversight Committee hearing about "government interference" in speech, where Twitter executives admitted the pre-Elon Musk company used various tacks to suppress certain political content and covertly communicated with the feds.

Disputes about COVID-19 policy and censorship played only a small role at Thursday's subcommittee hearing, as when Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) tried to discredit former Obama administration appointee Elliot Williams for his lobbying firm representing Google and Pfizer. This "revolving door" breeds distrust in the feds, Gaetz said.

Democrats went after GOP witnesses too. Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) mocked retired FBI agent and whistleblower Thomas Baker for describing the Jan. 6 riot as "crimes" rather than "domestic terrorism," while Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) dismissed law professor Jonathan Turley's analysis of the Twitter Files as "opinion" because he never worked at Twitter.

The subcommittee has heard from "dozens and dozens of whistleblowers" just in the FBI, with one sitting for a transcribed interview Tuesday and many more expected to do so, Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) said.

Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) demanded GOP staff turn over their notes from pre-deposition meetings with whistleblowers. Jordan retorted "you didn't show up" for the Tuesday deposition, prompting objections from Democrats that they've been left in the dark.

Ranking member Stacey Plaskett (D-V.I.) set the tone for Democrats by dubbing the subcommittee "a place to settle scores ... advance conspiracy theories," disrupt the FBI's work against "chaos" and interfere in ongoing criminal investigations, including Trump's.
