The march in NYC, which featured the Party of Socialism and Liberation leading the way, dissolved into violence in Times Square when a man began stomping on a police car and breaking the windshield. Police tried to arrest him and then others tried to free him. Then the police were trying to make another arrest, reportedly of one of the organizers of the march, when a woman intervened and started allegedly punching at cops.

Despite staying on taxpayers’ payroll during the height of the pandemic panic, greedy bureaucrats in the Internal Revenue Service, Transportation Security Administration, Federal Emergency Management Agency, United States Postal Service, Amtrak, and the Secret Service defrauded taxpayers out of millions more dollars under the guise of Covid unemployment fund and wage assistance programs.

In the Department of Homeland Security alone, nearly 2,000 ineligible or potentially ineligible employees received lost wage assistance designated for unemployed Americans, a 2022 DHSIG report found.

Thanks to rushed and lax standards, whereby “claimants only needed to self-certify they met eligibility requirements when they filed for [pandemic unemployment assistance] benefits,” more than $8.8 million in taxpayer funds were funneled to 638 DHS employees unlawfully. FEMA’s state workforce agencies also paid out $1.2 million in “lost wages assistance” to 935 DHS workers who were “fully employed.” At least 366 of those ineligible DHS officials were actually paid overtime during the period they were approved, receiving up to hundreds of dollars per week on top of normal unemployment benefits.

The illegal grift by federal “fraudsters” earned the attention of Republican Sen. Joni Ernst and her January “make ‘em squeal” award, a monthly effort led by Ernst to expose government corruption and “make Washington more competent and less wasteful.”

I don’t want to oversell it — we’re not “there” yet — but the latest evidence of significant movement came this week in the form of an Epoch Times op-ed, penned by libertarian journalist and founder of the Brownstone Institute Jeffrey Tucker, titled “Leviathan Must Be Stopped.” (It was originally published last week but updated yesterday).

About mid-way through the article, Mr. Tucker neatly described the entire problem; the pandemic, yes, but also what the pandemic has exposed: the deep network of institutional corruption digging its tendrils far beneath our social roots:

The institutions on which we used to depend to defend our liberties and rights—nonprofits, courts, intellectuals, academia, tech, and media—have failed spectacularly. We had no idea just how many of them had long ago been already captured. We didn’t know that the feds were deeply embedded at Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. We didn’t know that they’d already captured the news pages of The New York Times and so on. We thought that these institutions were merely ideologically biased. We didn’t know that they had become tools of the regime.​

When the intellectuals and nonprofits went silent when lockdowns, mask mandates, and vaccine mandates came along, we thought that they were merely afraid to speak. We hadn’t considered that their silence was evidence of a much deeper corruption. They were either being paid for silence or blackmailed into it.​

Precisely. It’s not JUST that the non-profits and corporate media lean liberal. The real problem is they are now wholly-owned CIA subsidiaries. The spies are running the institutions so seamlessly that the cold-war-era KGB minders of Pravda’s editorial board could’ve learned a thing or two from this generation of spooks.

Mr. Tucker also noticed that, during the pandemic, certain groups were better able to resist the government’s psychological manipulation techniques:

[T]he communities that resisted … weren’t the secular elites much less the academy or corporations. They were religious communities: the Hasidim, the Amish, the Mormons, the traditionalist Catholics, and later, the Evangelicals. It turns out, just speaking empirically, holding to a hard faith and living in a community of others who also hold that faith turned out to be the greatest single mental and intellectual protection against [mental] infection[.] My humble suggestion, then, is that if you don’t have a faith, get one immediately. You need it to protect you against the lies of the secular elites, who are selling their own false version of religion.​

While there were some secular folks who were able to resist the militarized mind games — some of them are part of the C&C army — they were few and far between. Jeffrey Tucker’s diagnosis and prescription are right: faith is the strongest defensive weapon against the élites’ demonic mind virus, and the Church is the group best positioned to organize a resistance. (It just needs to wake up.)

Apart from the Church, Mr. Tucker also had practical suggestions that will sound very familiar to regular C&C readers:

[W]e desperately need institutional reform and revolution. People talk about reforming the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Department of Education, the National Institutes of Health, and the FBI. Forget it. These institutions need to be completely defunded and defanged. They’re corrupt to the core, to the point that there’s no hope. In addition, we need dramatic legal reform. The quarantine power needs to go away. We need reform of money to get it away from the hands of the Federal Reserve. We need education solely in the control of families and communities.​

A few short years ago, Mr. Tucker’s commentary would have seemed a little unhinged, and would have been relegated to small, close-knit groups of hardcore libertarian readers. Now he’s been published in a major newspaper — true, it’s the Epoch Times, not the New York Times, but still.

The bill includes significant new family-law safeguards for parents who don’t want their kids vaccinated. First, the law would forbid any child welfare investigation based on the child’s vaccination status:

We need a lot more of this. Some of the most heartbreaking cases I get from people who call my office are ones who’ve run afoul of a pro-jab family law judge. Since family-law judges can enter almost any order if they determine it is in the best interest of the child, some profoundly disastrous things can and do happen in family court.

"MARAD will also consider how projects address climate change and sustainability, equity, and workforce development objectives," the department said. Those are the same broad goals that the Biden administration has been supporting as it tries to impose environment, social and governance (ESG) goals on private investors.

According to MARAD’s announcement of the grants, officials will "seek to award projects" consistent with Biden’s 2021 executive order on "Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government."

"The Department also seeks to award projects that address equity and environmental justice, particularly for communities that have experienced decades of underinvestment and are most impacted by climate change, pollution, and environmental hazards," consistent with another Biden order on "Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad."

The "quarterback for the federal cybersecurity team," CISA was designed to protect and defend the United States from cyberattacks. Amid growing U.S. vulnerability to surging, increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks, however, CISA has plunged headlong into domestic political disputes about election security efforts.

The agency was instrumental in assembling a network of nonprofit "disinformation" monitors to flag online content questioning the credibility of the 2020 election for censorship by Big Tech "content moderation" specialists employing a range of techniques ranging from "visibility filtering" to account suspensions.

The information control consortium was conceived as a mechanism for CISA and other federal security and law enforcement agencies to shape the contours of public debate through ostensibly independent surrogates without leaving fingerprints, thereby evading accountability for curtailing First Amendment rights of those dissenting from a centrally approved party line on election rules dovetailing with Democratic Party preferences.

Heritage Foundation legal fellow Zack Smith said measures of this kind are “par for the course” in an ongoing “war on police officers across the county, basically handcuffing them, not allowing them to do their jobs.”

“I think many that support these bills would say that these types of supposedly minor violations are disproportionately used as pretext to stop black or other minority members of their communities,” Smith told the DCNF. “But what officers find is that when they’re not allowed to enforce laws that are on the books, it essentially leads to an increase in under-policing in many of these communities.”

More than 20 Democratic Washington State House members are sponsoring a bill that would prohibit police officers from stopping drivers primarily for reasons including parking and nonmoving equipment violations, some misdemeanor warrants or equipment failure that would not immediately and seriously endanger roadway safety. “Research shows that prioritizing safety stops reduces traffic crash and injury outcomes and reduces racial disparities in traffic stops,” H.B. 1513’s preliminary text says.
