[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif](St. Mary’s City, MD) June 12, 2009— St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM)invites photographers to capture the challenges of sailing by entering the 2009 St. Mary’s College of Maryland Governor’s Cup Yacht Race Professional Photography Competition. This year’s race, which begins in Annapolis July 31 and ends at SMCM August 1, marks the 36th annual running of the Bay’s oldest and most prestigious overnight race. Discover and explore firsthand what goes into an overnight sailboat competition. The potential for dramatic photographs is remarkable. The first-place winner of each category in the Governor’s Cup Professional Photography Competition will receive an SMCM Governor’s Cup Trophy and $250. Second- and third-place winners will receive an SMCM Governor’s Cup Trophy. Winning photos may also be published in such media outlets as Chesapeake Life magazine, SpinSheet, Chesapeake Baymagazine, as well as SMCM publications – The Mulberry Tree and River Gazette. Photo entries may also be exhibited by the College in various venues and used for promotional purposes. Appropriate photo credit will be given.
Contest entries must be submitted as prints and are due by Saturday, September 19, 2009. A completed entry form must be firmly attached to the reverse side of each submitted photo. A copy of the form can be found on the Web site. Forms may be photocopied. Entries will be judged by a panel of SMCM art faculty and staff.

Photographers may do one of the following:
- Ride the photography/press boat from 5 – 7 p.m. at the start of the race in Annapolis.
- Race aboard a competing yacht from their media market or hometown.
- Ride the finish boat and cover the day-long festivities at the College on Saturday, August 1.
Photo contest rules:
- Contest entries must be photographs taken during the 2009 Governor’s Cup Yacht Race or related 2009 Governor’s Cup events, such as the post-race party at the College, the start of the race, or the race participants.
- Entries must be submitted as printed photographs. Photos may be of any size, and in color or black and white.
- Each photograph submitted must have a completed entry form attached with all fields filled in: name, title of entry, address, and either phone number or e-mail address.
- All entries must be postmarked on or before Saturday, September 19.
- Photo entries may be exhibited by the College in various venues and used for promotional purposes. Winning photos, with the appropriate photo credit, may be published in various media outlets as well asthe College’s publications: The River Gazette and The Mulberry Tree.
- Judges will be a panel of experts selected from the College, and winners will be notified when judging is complete.
