Economic Development Summit Discusses the Future of Maryland’s Workforce
ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan today addressed more than 500 business and educational leaders at the sold-out 2019 Maryland Governor’s Business Summit. Held at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel in Harbor East, the economic development conference highlighted the state’s workforce, including ways to attract and train employees, diversify and develop teams, modernize apprenticeship programs, and plan for the workforce of the future.
“I want to thank the hundreds of business leaders who have joined us from all across the state, not only for being here, but also for the critical role that you are playing in Maryland’s incredible economic resurgence,” said Governor Hogan. “It is thanks to each and every one of you that Maryland has experienced one of the biggest economic turnarounds in America with more businesses now open and more people working than ever before in the history of our state.”
Governor Hogan highlighted his administration’s focus on making Maryland more “Open for Business” through efforts like the Customer Service Initiative, which makes it easier and more efficient to do business with state agencies; the growth of the state’s apprenticeship programs; and a major expansion of the Opportunity Zone initiative to bring jobs and capital investment to underserved communities in Maryland.
Hosted by the Maryland Marketing Partnership, the day-long summit also featured remarks by Maryland Commerce Secretary Kelly M. Schulz, presenting sponsor BGE with CEO Calvin Butler, IntelliGenesis’ president and CEO Angie Lienert, Sage Policy Group chairman and CEO Anirban Basu, UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski, and SparkVision founder MaryBeth Hyland, among others.
“We were very excited to bring together many of Maryland’s best and brightest business and educational leaders to focus on an issue that impacts not only our state, but every state in our nation,” said Secretary Schulz. “We had some great insights today from many different perspectives, and I look forward to working with our partners to take what we learned and put it into practice.”
