ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan today issued the following statement regarding President Biden’s visit to New York City to support increased funding for police and public safety:
“I’m glad that President Biden took the time today to highlight the urgent need for increased funding for state and local police. It is what I have been pushing for here in Maryland, with a $500 million Re-Fund The Police Initiative to recruit and retain more quality officers, expand community police efforts, improve training, and to provide body cams and other technology upgrades.
“There is clearly a growing bipartisan consensus that putting more investment into police and public safety isn’t just a good idea, but absolutely critical for keeping our citizens safe. Now that President Biden and a number of major cities, including Chicago, New York, and San Francisco, have followed our lead, I hope the leaders of the General Assembly will come around on this issue. I will continue to do everything I can to work across the aisle and convince them to do so.
“This is just too important to let partisan politics get in the way.”
