ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor Larry Hogan today welcomed the National Park Service’s announcement that it will begin a new phase of repairs on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. This comes after Governor Hogan spoke out about the horrific conditions on the parkway, and redoubled his efforts to have the state take over the road.
“The administration is right to recognize the overwhelming outcry from Marylanders about the absolutely horrible conditions on 295,” said Governor Hogan. “It should not have taken this long, but what is most important is that we fix the road now.”
Last June, Governor Hogan announced the signing of a General Agreement between the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) and the State of Maryland to evaluate the transfer of the portion of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (I-295) that runs through Maryland from DOI to the state.
As conditions have worsened over the winter, Governor Hogan has spoken out about the need for the National Park Service to get serious about fixing the road. “It’s outrageous and unacceptable,” he said last week. He then wrote a letter to the congressional delegation urging them to support plans to transfer the parkway to the state. “It is clear that the state taking ownership of the parkway is the only viable long-term solution to these problems,” Governor Hogan wrote. “We want to take over the road because it is the best way to take care of the road.”
