Application Deadline is August 6
ANNAPOLIS (June 03, 2014) – The state’s new Spay and Neuter Grants Program, administered by the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA), is soliciting its first round of applications for projects that will help reduce the number of cats and dogs euthanized in Maryland animal shelters. Grant applications, which are available now, must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Aug. 6 to be considered in this first round of funding. Applicants will be notified within 60 days after the submittal deadline whether their projects will be funded, whole or in part. The grant guidelines and application as well as additional information about how to apply are available online at: www.mda.maryland.gov/spay_neuter_program/Pages/default.aspx.
Organizations eligible for grants include local government or 501(c)3 nonprofit animal welfare organizations. Eligible projects must efficiently and effectively facilitate, promote and increase spay and neuter services for cats and dogs and should target low-income communities or populations to the greatest extent possible. The minimum grant amount to be considered will be $5,000. About $500,000 is available for this round of funding.
The state’s Spay and Neuter Fund was established by the Maryland General Assembly during the 2013 Legislative Session as a new program within MDA. An advisory board, appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture, provides advice on how the fund should be administered; how competitive grants should be solicited and evaluated; and what information MDA should require from local animal shelters and other qualifying animal welfare organizations. The Board also provided recommendations to the guidelines and regulations needed to implement the state’s Spay and Neuter Fund. See a list of board members.
Funding for this program comes from fees paid by the pet food industry on each of the dog and cat foods they register to sell in the state.
