Great Danes

Anyone have one? What can you tell me about them? Are they really as family friendly as I've been reading? What are some bad things about them? Are they very destructive?

My bff/former roomie has had a couple of them. From what I've seen of hers, they can get a little hyper and need some training. Hers were good with kids, but they could easily knock a toddler down just because of their size. She had a female with IBD, and I think she said that can be somewhat common in the breed.

They eat like a horse and don't live too terribly long, but they sure are cool.

I dog sat for a great Dane..my fave dof ever..so sweet..tons of energy for such a big dog..always barrelling around...just so lovey dovey, thought he was a lap dog! but I would never own one..my heart is not set up to lose such a sweety pie dog so soon...but if you can handle it..great dog.

I know they have shorter then usual health spans ..at this point I'm not sure if thats really a detterent or not.

I am curious if they are more destructive because of their size or just as destructive as normal dogs.

oh! No, not sure yet. Just found an available litter of Great Danes and I've wanted one since I was a kid. I REALLY REALLY want one but now that I'm adult I'm not so sure if its the "grown up" thing to do though because of their size.

The hubby would rather have a boxer or another bulldog. I've talked him into allowing a great dane and he's left the decision of our next dog up to me....UGGGHHH

I think they have the potential to be more destructive just because of their sheer size. I think that makes training a must. I was impressed when my friend brough her current dane over. His head was taller than our kitchen counter, and he's just sniff. He never tried to eat anything.

I am on my 3rd Great Dane.
They are wonderful, clumbsy couch potatoes.
Not graceful by any means. No Brakes and the tail wipes things out.
Puppys are and can be destructive.
My first 2 expired before 7
They do have alot of health issues.
But to me well worth having them in my family.
