Has anyone had this happen? I have a 7 month old dachshund that apparently has a growth plate problems. Causes him pain and he barely puts his leg down anymore. talking about possible surgery. Would like comments/opinions from someone that has dealt with this. thanks

I had a foster dog that had an injured growth plate on his front leg. One side of the growth plate stopped growing so his foot turned about 45 degrees to the outside. The Drs. thought it may have been from an early impact injury when he was a puppy. Surgery was done at MASH (Mid-Atlantic Animal Specialty Hospital) in Calvert Co. Took about 8-10 weeks to heal and then followed with a few therapy sessions. Today he has a wonderful family to play with and doesn't seem to have any issues using his leg. They were able to get it just about straight again. As your dog is still young it should have a great chance for success.

Picture of him when we first found him and one with his cast on.

Glad to hear everything worked out for you. Went today and had more x-rays and got some more pain meds. will have to wait to see if surgeon thinks surgery will help. Vet suggested MASH for surgery if needed. that is where she is taking x-rays next week for their opinion. Since your surgery was successful, it gives me hope too.

Our mastiff mix pup has epiphysitis in one of his elbows. Doesn't seem to cause him a whole lot of pain, only when he runs around a lot. We try to limit his movement somewhat, so he's not too hard on it. We got x-rays and the vet said he may grow out of it, but may not. We're just on a wait-and-see with him. We tried a 30 day treatment of rimadyl, but didn't see much swelling go down, so we took him off it.

Vet talked to MASH today and they suggested surgery. It is not going to be cheap (I already was prepared for that). Now I just have to weight the pros and cons.
