DUBLIN, Ireland - A thief made off with 180 kegs of Guinness beer after smoothly driving into the Dublin brewery, which makes the black stout and snatching a trailer load of drink, police said Thursday.

The incident took place Wednesday at the Guinness brewery on the banks of Dublin's River Liffey where Ireland's trademark tipple has been brewed for almost 250 years.

The lone raider's haul also contained 180 kegs of Budweiser and 90 barrels of Carlsberg lager, police said.

"A man drove into the yard in a truck and took a trailer containing the drink which has an estimated value of 64,000 euros ($94,770)," a police spokesman said."

Hot Damn!

From the article.....
"Freeflow officers manning many checkpoints across the city are expected now also to be on the look out for any large quantity of stolen drink flowing through Dublin's traffic."

Let's hope that it will flow in its modified form!

I would imagine that they will find the Guinness kegs....empty...then the Budweiser kegs....still full! the Irish do have standards about what they drink...

Supper's Ready
Budweiser is actually fairly popular in Ireland. I have relatives there, have been there several times and was surprised to see how many locals ordering Bud. I'm sure it is because of the price of Guinness vs. Bud.

More Guinness for me when I visit :yay:

Are so particular what they drink why would they even have Budweiser there?

My guess is some Irisman prefers Bud.

I fact the thief stole 180 kegs of Guiness and 180 kegs of Budweiser, so one might even guess they like Budweiser as well as they do Guiness.

Update

"(AP) Ireland's national police force has arrested two men in connection with an audacious robbery last week on the landmark Guinness Brewery in Dublin - but said Thursday they were still looking others involved in the beer banditry.

The Garda Siochana police force declined to specify how many kegs have been recovered following the Nov. 29 raid, when a lone man drove a truck into the brewery, hitched up a trailer loaded with 450 kegs and drove straight out through the security gate into rush-hour traffic. Guinness called it the biggest robbery in the 248-year history of the brewery."

A friend of mine suggested that Guinness is too old-fashioned for the younger crowd; they want a beer with an edgy, modern image... like Bud...

... even though it's crap.

Budweiser is the #1 import Lager in Ireland. Or, it was when we were over there several years ago.

I'm in agreement w/ Bustem, Murphy's is much tastier than Guiness BUT I'll drink either one.

BG and Bob--> Do your Guiness tour early in the day, that part of Dublin was pretty rough when we went. You HAVE to check out the old churches in Dublin. There is one where the nobility all had their boxes and the banners bearing the family crests are still there after several hundred years. Sounds boring but the history of it is cool. I can try and dredge up the names of some of the places we went if you're interested.
