Belleville, NJ. Home of Joe Pesci, The 4 Seasons & Stretch's Chicken Savoy. The town faced some serious white flight in the last 20 years. Now 3 out of 4 high school students identify as hispanic. The numbers are probably a lot higher at the elementary school level.

A group of Belleville High School employees are being investigated by district officials for reportedly wearing t-shirts with the words “Gulf of America” — the name change to the Gulf of Mexico suggested by President Donald Trump.

In a letter sent to parents and staff this week, interim Schools Superintendent Nicholas Perrapato said a “small group of staff members wore coordinated clothing” that offended some students and employees. About 73% of the 1,500 students are Hispanic, according to enrollment data from two years ago.

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has said the United States cannot unilaterally change the name of an international body of water.

Well she's wrong about that. There are any number of places in the world that are called different things by different countries or cultures.

The Etymology of the Gulf of Mexico

Hmmm....since the Spanish were big-time colonizers who conquered by using a lot of violent means, I think they've given up any claim to the name. Since the gulf borders the United States, we have as much right to name it whatever we want.
