DJ Ashba, lead guitarist for the rock band Guns N’ Roses, announced Monday that he is leaving the band.

In a letter posted on his website, the musician said his six-year stint with the band has changed his life forever, calling his initial audition a long shot.

Ashba ended the letter with a nod to Axl Rose, lead singer and the only original member of Guns N’ Roses.

“You are a true friend and a champion of mine and I am forever grateful,” Ashba wrote. “And even as I move on to pursue other endeavors, I will always remain one of your biggest fans.”
