I think most would agree, hackers are a PITA.

Is hacking to them a way get their jollies, like any other crimminal?
What motivates these folks to reak havoc on their keyboards?

"Hacked again

We put the new forum up and it was hacked into again. This is partially our fault for not doing a better job of updating the old forum software, etc., as we know and should have realize there is no discounting slimy little creeps like the one who hacked us. We know who did it and are tracking him down. We think we have his address and we understand the EU looks very unfavorably on these things. In the event that there is no cooperation from him, you can be very sure that we will pursue every possible legal avenue that we may have to punish the criminal. In the meantime we are working to fix the problem and hope to get the board up again, perhaps Friday. Thanks for everybody's help and please bear with us....."

If you ask most hackers, it's definitely for the thrill of it. Knowing you CAN do it and the excitement of eluding the authorities. It's not really about gaining anything.

I read a heck of a book about it several years ago, but I can't remember the name of it right now. It delved into the psyche of the typical hacker and was quite fascinating talking about their motives. Glory, the thrill of accomplishment, getting over on the authorities...NOT about stealing or anything like that.

But you have to remember that most of what you see on public forums and other basic web sites are not real hackers. They are using wares they download of their teeny hackers sites. They think they are cool and call themselves hackers but really they are nothing more than software operators.

I will now translate this for Toxic...

Like Jazz Lady said, "hackers" are actually the destructive form of "crackers" which are your typical code breaking, phone phreaks and such. Hacker's however delve into more of a dark side of the internet. Crackers will go through sites, software and networks and find flaws that can be exploited and crack into them only to prove they can. Hackers on the other hand think that the information behind these flaws should be exploited to whatever end.

But the idiots and n00bs who hack forum software and the like to post messages are just tools with software from #hack and other IRC type chats. Not actual crackers or hackers who would never leave a trace of their presence.

By the way was the book Blue No Where? Great book about the whole Hacker\Cracker world plus a murder mystery as a bonus.

No, that isn't it but that sounds like an interesting read. I have looked on amazon.com for it and still haven't found it. It was a really good book, too. :ohwell:
