Halliburton/Where did the 8.8 billion go?

The monitoring board said despite repeated requests it had not been given access to U.S. audits of contracts held by Halliburton, which was once run by Vice President Dick Cheney, and other firms that used the development funds.

Can you read the problem with that statement? The U.S. audits their contracts, but they are complaining because we won't let an international body come in and audit our audit of our contracts.

If you have a problem with our own auditing of our contracts, I can show you the website to the GAO. You can whine to them.

Also, Halliburton didn't get the 8.8 -- they got 1 billion for supplying fuel. Which our auditers audit. Again, I point you to the GAO, but somehow I doubt you really understand anything about how our government functions.

The truth is that the Haliburton subsidiary Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR) was the only company capable of getting products, personnel, and infrastructure into countries like Iraq and Afghanistan. Having just recently spent several months at the Kandahar Airfield with the Marines of the 22nd MEU, I can testify that KBR is providing a much needed service...they run the galley's and chow halls, laundry, utilities like electricity and water...and the majority of the cargo handling. They are putting a lot of quality chow into the Marines, Airmen, Soldiers, as well as the occasional Sailor and all the Civilian Contractors as well. I can also tell you that the conditions are not real hospitable, and who the heck is going to drive a truck through Taliban Country, unless they are paid some big bucks anyway? I saw one or two people working for KBR who admitted to having been homeless and jobless prior to getting an opportunity to work in Kandahar...and while aware of the risks....those folks were taking advantage of that opportunity to turn their lives around.

I laugh when I hear about how any Contractor has a "cushy" job overseas....or one that is well-paid....if it wasn't well-paid, then who in their right mind would go over there?

:yeahthat: I guess some would want the government to put the contracts up for bid months prior to commencing any invasion. I guess the contracts should specify the time, place, and nature of the invasion to give everyone a fair chance to compete and to hell with the safety of our troops.

Didn't Clinton do something similar to that in Somalia? Released times and places to the media. :duh: As I remember, the Marines had a hard time getting ashore because to all the press on the beach. I could be wrong on this. This is strictly from a memory.

Hate to say it, but it happened on the watch of Bush 41. Granted, he was already a lame duck, and Clinton was the President-Elect, and no doubt briefed on what was going on....I'll leave the speculation on who leaked what to others.

I remember it well....I was on the Ranger at the time....and we had been ordered to move out of the Gulf and take up station off the coast of Mogadishu. Luckily, we had been outfitted with a satellite dish antenna and were receiving CNN, which was a novelty in those days. We all laughed as some newsie was trying to interview a Navy SEAL who had just finished swimming ashore...."Excuse me sir, but are you a Navy SEAL?" it was hilarious.....the seal was looking away from the camera and trying to ignore the reporter and the camera....but it also drove home that some folks (i.e. the news media) just cannot be trusted with sensitive information, and have severe lapses in judgement.

After that, there were a ton of media camped out on the beaches....
