My son told me that his teacher said they were having a party this year and could wear costumes. I will be calling the school (Mechanicsville Elem) to check but has anyone else heard anything?
Heck, come up to Trinity UMC in Prince Frederick Saturday night (the 30th, no this weekend) about 6:30. They let the kids "trunk or treat" in the parking lot from one decorated vehicle to the next. Lots of fun!
Anybody else having a big kiddie Halloween happening?
Leonardtown has Fall Parties. The kids all attend a safety program in the auditorium, have a parade (where they can wear costumes if they choose to), then small classroom parties.
My son is having his Fall party today. He goes to school in Calvert. The costumes they are allowed to wear is "predetermined" - which means, they are told what costumes they are allowed to wear. He had a choice of dressing up in anything fall themed - leave, tree, Indian, etc or anything to do with America - statute of liberty, flag or wear red, white and blue. He wore the red, white and blue.
I'm glad to see schools treating Halloween for what it is--a big party. For years, I've heard people claim that Halloween is a big propaganda campaign for Satanism, and they've tried to pressure schools into dropping the holiday. Even more ridiculous is the claim by some Wiccans that Halloween unfairly stigmatizes their religion--see the Oy Vey thread.
Lexington Park Elementary used to hold a 'Book Character' parade at Halloween time. The students could dress in costume as their favorite character. Everything had to be related to a character in a book, for a 'whole language' approach. Of course, some children had books about Ninja Turtles and Spiderman, so they found ways around it. And the students all called it a Halloween party anyway! At least all students could participate, even if their parents did not approve of the idea of Halloween.
My work is having a party for the kids next week. Each floor decorates in a theme. I will be in California, but I bought 6 bags of candy to contribute.

That is great I hate the fact that today we have to be worried about being PC, but Halloween parties have been around for a long time, I hate to see that ruined because a few people think it is devil worship. I have very few memories of my childhood, but I do remember dressing up and having a parade on Halloween.
My son's class did their own theme. I think each class did their own theme for that matter and then they have crafts that they will be doing and have a little party in their classrooms.
