Very cool but I wonder how abrasive the sand is to the rotor blades.

I was thinking the same exact thing, I know what it does to my mower blades.

It must shorten the life of the rotor blades significantly.

Pretty abrasive, that's why rotor blade leading edges are covered with a very tough rubbery coating that can be peeled off and replaced. Similar to some cell phone screen protective coverings.

That looks pretty freaking cool. I have to say that I think the second picture is probably the blade tip lights.

If you are ever on or around base at night, look for a V22. Looks like 2 big glowing rings if its dark enough.
