Handyman(or woman!) Question

I am a total noob when it comes to doing handyman work. My father never taught me and I am trying to learn. I have moved into a new home(my 1st) and want to do things right.

I want to install a baby gate at the bottom of my stairs. One side is the stair post (not going to screw anything into this!) and the other side consists of a wall with drywall at the top(no stud) and baseboard at the bottom. How should I approach putting a hinge into the drywall, if I can for this purpose?

I bought an appropriate baby gate for the area. It will need to be hinged in the wall so it can swing. (side note: I tried to find a gate that just uses pressure to avoid screwing anything into the wall. No luck.)

Any help that anyone provides I am very grateful!

Thanks!

well i wouldn't recomend screwing anything into drywall, eventually it's gonna get ripped out and you will have to patch later..
but if you must, i recomend using these...DRYWALL ANCHORS <----click

Thanks!

We got the Pressure type of Baby Gate at Wal Mart, we have a total of five. Three short ones for the doorways in the house, and two tall and long ones to gate off the ends of the deck so the lil guy can go in and out of the house but he can't leave the 'house'.

We actually bought the first long and tall one from Dr's Foster and Smith, an online pet supply store.

They call me ... Sarcasmo
We have two pressure gates that has a hinged door inside a "U" shaped frame, I think we got them from Babies R Us or Taget. The pressure pads are adjustable to accomodate base moulding.

Exactly what I need, thank you.
Anytime.
We bought 2 of them.
They work well.
I used 1x2's against the drywall and stair banister to make sure not to hurt it.
