Hard Drive Upgrade

I'm going to be upgrading my hard drive from my current 80GB IDE drive to a pair of 250GB SATA drives in a RAID 1 configuration. What's the best way to move everything over and make the RAID the boot drive?

Not to down you, but if you have to ask you probally shouldnt do it...

You have to format the new drives and then load your OS onto them and then transfer whatever you need from the old 80 gig. I assume you know about setting masters and slaves and such for the IDE's. set your 80 gig as a slave and boot up with the new HD with the new OS on it. transfer everything you need from the old drive and tada your done... :larry:

Oh yea what mobo do you have? how are you handling the SATA drives? onboard or an add on card? i need more info to help ya.

Now we know why you dont deal with computers or arent techincal enough for them :killingme :killingme

The easiest thing to do is simple. First off SATA doesnt require jumpers for master or slave. There are CHANNELS.....

What you can do is just hook your sata hard drive up, fdisk it, and copy all your "data" onto that drive.

Then unplug the sata drive, do a FRESH wipe, and keep the ide 80 gig as your main drive for your o/s and any programs you wish to install. Use the 250 gig drives as storage ;)

Problem solved... next time ask a computer geek like SAHRAB or chess ;) Or that someone that works on them :) but we still  you floyd haha

Well, I actually do know what I'm doing (would someone who doesn't even know what a RAID 1 is?). I've built several computers from scratch. The real question was what's the best way of moving everything over without reinstalling everything. But I'll probably just go with what chess said and keep the 80GB as a boot/non-critical data drive and have the RAID for my more important stuff (mostly photos).

If you want to keep programs, then dang.. hrmmm I was going to say just install those sata hdrives, move all your "data" over and then wipe it, but since you want to keep programs on there.. Thats a call you would have to make.... But wiping it would be the next best thing
