Hardware issue, need advice ASAP

My beloved niece did a number on my cd drive. Actually it's the r/w drive. She knocked the tray of track and I can't seem to get it back on. My question is this... which would do more harm &/or cause more hassle to let the computer constantly run the gears, trying to push this tray in and out or go inside the computer and disconnect the wires going to the drive?

I will cut the power when I can, but I can't keep the computer turned off, I have too many things to do.

Try to push this tray in. Sometimes they work fine after you shove them in. I have delt with this over a half dozen times.

Just unplug the power from the drive if you can't get the disk drawer back on the track.

I tried that. I can see that it is sitting crooked and I can get the gears to mesh a little, but as soon as the gears turn on their own, it pops loose again.

I'm going to get the little troublemaker's father to check it out, but in the meantime, I'm worried about the gears burning up turning back and forth. But I'm reluctant to go inside and pull wires apart. I looked and I know which wires go to the drive, but I'm not confident that this won't cause more problems.

Don't worry about the grey ribbon, power the computer off and unhook the "normally" white colored plug.. No problems...

If you want to hope to save the drive, go inside and just remove the power connector; four wires, red, 2 black, and yellow.

Ok, I did that. Thanks. But when I powered back up, it said it detected a change (I assume the gobbledy gook that followed meant it sensed the drive isn't there anymore)

My concern is, will it detect the drive IS there when I get it fixed? I don't think I have driver software. Of course, I didn't deinstall any software, but will it automatically know what to do? The last time I had a similar problem, it was with an older computer and it required relinking the software to the hardware.

If you get it fixed, there will be no change. The drivers are still in tact. If you opt for a new drive, you will just have to install the drivers that come with the new drive.. If it even comes with any...

CD, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-RW, and etc. drives do not need drivers and do not come with them.
You will need to look at the CD drive when you take it out and see where the jumpers are set Slave, Master, or Cable Select and make sure the new drive you put in uses the same jumper setting.

Not exactly true regarding the drivers. Some drives have proprietary drivers which you have to load (I have disk). Some drives use the Microsoft generic drivers so you don't have to load them. Either way, there are still drivers.
