Didn’t see this yet, was leaving Harris Teeter and saw that they will be shutting down at 9PM next week (jaw on the floor!!). I looked it up and this is nationwide?!?!

So when I was young all stores were closed by sunset, probably was energy savings. But since the 80’s I’ve been spoiled with my late night grocery shopping, In fact I remember when all our SOMD food lions were 24 hours, even the Rite Aid in Charlotte Hall was 24hr not that long ago. What happened? Did we lose too many workers this last year cause of COVID? People too scared to be in public? The Child Tax credit keeping too many folks at home when they should be ringing up my radishes?

I pray for our county every night, Johnny Wood would never close at 9pm.

The 7-11 near us growing up was open from 7-11pm.

Lots of companies have relearned that there is no need on most cases to keep stores open 24-7-365. Most Walmarts now close at 11 pm and reopen at 6am. The have eliminated a complete shift.
The only folks working are stocking and sanitation crews.

Loss of employees, our Dollar Generals and both grocery stores have been closing early. Dollar General stores have closed a few times in the afternoon, so what few employees are working can restock.
Funny that Towelhead Bobs 7-11 style store and the Chinese rest have plugged right through all of this sillyness. Bobs has been 24-7-365 since they bought it 3-4 years ago.

Not sure about HT, but Giant, Walmart, and Target all restock during prime shopping hours. Between the stockers and the pick-up order shoppers with the giant carts, you can't get down the aisles.

My biggest pet peeve with Walmart is this. You can't get down the isles because the dumb a***s with the carts trying to fill online orders have them sitting in the middle of the isle.

I've even mentioned to people stocking the shelves if they put their cart on the same side they were working on they wouldn't have to move every time someone wanted to go down the aisle and they looked at me like they didn't understand wtf i was talking about.

it seems like we‘re at a transition point, like in 10 years all these stores will be half the size. Most people will order online and the store will convert half their space to more of a warehouse type setup with employees filling orders, then the other half will be the traditional store. It’ll have fewer options since there is less space, but it’ll make the online ordering much more efficient.

Something I've done for years - but someone else fails to do EVERY time I shop in a grocery store - I am pushing the cart down an aisle and I need to look at the shelf for a bit - I move the cart further down a little and examine from the opposite side or I step in back of or in front of the cart -

So as to leave the other half of the aisle free to traverse. It amazes me how OFTEN someone will do the ONE thing that will block the aisle - stop their cart and proceed to peruse the shelf in the one remaining space left to get by. Either that - or manage to park their cart RIGHT NEXT to an aisle display, accomplishing the same thing - blocking the entire aisle.

Now, most people, if you politely say "excuse me" they will move and say "oh I'm sorry" and that's it. But it really isn't all that hard to avoid it in the first place.

Im a big man and I'm told if I don't shave every day I look like an axe murderer. When I'm fed up with this sort of thing I will get uncomfortably close to people and just stare at them without blinking. This usually moves them with an apology, had one guy turn around and run away one day.
