Harvard Hysterics

He thought he was speaking in a place that encourages uncircumscribed intellectual explorations. He was not. He was on a university campus.

Is this the fruit of feminism? A woman at the peak of the academic pyramid becomes theatrically flurried by an unwelcome idea and, like a Victorian maiden exposed to male coarseness, suffers the vapors and collapses on the drawing room carpet in a heap of crinolines until revived by smelling salts and the offending brute's contrition?</NITF>

Hopkins's hysteria was a sample of America's campus-based indignation industry, which churns out operatic reactions to imagined slights.

You'll have to asplain that article to me cause my innate genetically based gender difference in cognition makes it too hard to think :pout:

Bogart, the link took me to a login page (this is one reason I hate it when people just post a link). Since I don't want to be a Washington Post website member, could you please post a short summary of the article here? Using your own words, maybe? Thanks in advance - I'm curious about this one!

It's cute how you try to smarten up the forums, ineffective, but cute.

...Wills gist:

Modern liberalism states that there is no natural inclinations, IE, boys good at math, girls good at home ec, there is only the environment you grew up in which is to say more girls would be in the sciences if we were not a nation of stuffy old white men and their shallow minds.

So, Summers, at a symposium to discuss why Jills don't go into science as often as Jacks do, suggested that it may be gender (nature over nurture). Maybe girls don't like math as much as boys?

Well, instead of having a discusion as you might expect on a COLLEGE campus, Ms. Tightpants, who is on the panel, is well PHD'd in the sciences and is a wheel at another school, gets the vapors. Says she's SO outraged at this overt sexist suggestion that she may well not be able to even have lunch or be in the same room again with Mr. Barbarian Summers to discuss it or perhaps accept his apology for such blaspheming.

Will says, basically, getting so upset and becoming near incapacitated at an IDEA may well be another reason there are not many women in the sciences.

This woman is grandstanding and Will is calling her on it.
