I have never had a sleep study done, but I work in the medical field, and know about them. If your Wife is over weight, she may have sleep apnea which causes her to wake often. Even normal weight people can have this problem. If she does have apnea, they will give her a C-Pap Machine where she'll wear a mask that gently puffs air if she goes apnic (stops breathing) for a couple of seconds. I am not a Doctor.

I had one.

For me, I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and got a CPAP machine, sleep a hell of a lot better and can function a hell of a lot better during the day now.

So, what’s your question?

Loads of us here have had sleep studies. Run a search. Barring that, yes, she should do a sleep study if she has trouble sleeping. It's risk free and easy to do. Bean building or Calvert are your only options locally I believe. Pros - she will sleep better and not have the consequences of apneas, daytime drowsiness, etc. Cons - she might come out of that haze and see your weird post and rethink the marriage.

Man, I'm still here !!!
Why does she not sleep well, Maybe a racing mind, thinking about everything and then some??????? Try Melatonin, That SH!T works, stops your mind from waking you up... It's OTC...

My g/f had more than one done and they discovered she had narcolepsy and she finally started getting the treatment she needed after many years of problems that many doctors and people wrote off as no big deal or as her being an overworked mom.

So if a doctor recommended your wife for a sleep study, I believe she should do it. There are a variety of things that could be wrong and the treatment may be something totally different than just a sleeping pill.

If you are worried about your wife having a pre-diagnised illness with your insurance, supposedly Obamacare is stopping that from being a concern anymore, but I'm not sure how that works. You may want to actually ask the doctor versus the health insurance, or ask the folks who have been diagnosed if they've encountered problems.

Apnea isn't isolated to over-weight or obese folks; infants, babies, children, underweight folks can have it too. A sleep study will narrow down some issues. Some folk’s w/apnea suffer from gasping, kicking, jumping, yelling, etc. in addition to restless sleep. A C-PAP machine usually brings instant relief-if fitted properly. My heart goes out to folks who don't have a restful sleep. Good luck Justme2 w/the misses.

Appreciation/Thanks

For all the suggestions, she has a lot of jumping while she sleeps and that can be her problem. But just to have money to pour out we don't.

We do not own a boat to pour money in. already spent 1200 on this idea and looking to spend another 400.

My point is if she is to go to bed a little earlier and take a pill so be it. But to push yourself to exhaustion is another

A question Justme2-do you lose sleep because of wife's sleep issues?

If she has sleep apnea and takes a sleeping pill, it is MUCH harder for her body to 'wake up' to remember to breathe. I have sleep apnea and was told to NOT take sleeping pills. Spend the money, save a life. No brainer. Also, going to sleep earlier doesn't mean a thing. If she has apnea, she is not getting REM - deep - sleep. so in effect, she is just kinda in stasis, not getting rest at all - you say she jumps a lot - I bet that is her body 'kick-starting' her breathing. I had about 7-8k episodes in a 6 hr period. Seriously, get the study.

That is a symptom of sleep apnea; the restless leg is the body’s way of waking her up to breath.

Most insurance should cover sleep apnea and the CPAP machine/supplies. Out of pocket expense will depend on your deductable.

It takes a little getting used to sleeping with the “Darth Vadar” mask (as my wife calls it) but damn, it works and she will defiantly. Taking sleeping pills actually makes sleep apnea worse, as said, it make it harder for the body to wake up to breath.

Also, as stated, sleeping earlier will not do a bit of good if she has sleep apnea. I could sleep all day and not get a lick of rest because I can’t sleep for more than a few minutes at a time, I would wake up more tired than when I went to bed.

Get the study done, and get treatment, it will actually reduce a lot of other issues and she will be more active/less tired.

PS, one thing to try, stay away from caffine, if she drinks a lot of coffee, tea, soda, or eats chocolate (yes, it has caffine in it) then tell her to stop, not a few hours before she goes to be but for a few days, see if that will improve her sleep. Also, turn off all electronics, cellphone, TV, radio. And that Melatonin stuff works but don't take it until after she does the sleep study and gets the results. Thing 1 takes it and it works well for him, now if I can get him to stop drinking sodas before he goes to be and to turn off his damn cellphone.

Depends on the type of apnea, I have central sleep apnea and ambien works wonders.

If they have trouble sleeping, depending on the reason the answer could be as simple as one of those things you stick on your nose to keep it open, to a mask with a nebulizer attached to it. Sleeping pills are not the answer and its the one thing they are trying to avoid.

I would second GW but, I had better results than him. A sleep uber mega hella better. It not only saved my life but, made me feel 10 years younger.

A LOT of people have apnea and it always bothers me when they, A, are too vain to wear the freaking thing or B, don't enjoy the AMAZING results I got.

Newer masks are available which ae not so big. I use one that uses cannulas in my nose, no mask like before. Some people take time getting used to the CPAP, but I don't see any problem with it and feel a definite difference when traveling in the few rooms that do not have a plug.

Agreed, compared to sleeping before I had my CPAP and afterwards, it's a 100% difference and I don't even take a nap without it.

It does make a world of difference, I'm no longer living in a fog....or as I call it "boat mode".

Every person that I ever heard of that had a sleep study was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I'm skeptical. Seems like a good way to sell a bunch of high priced machines.

GW hit the nail on the head.

This is my hubs to a “T.” I had been after him for YEARS to get a sleep study done because of the insane snoring and I would hear him stop breathing during the night. It got to the point that he would wake me from a dead sleep and so I started sleeping in the spare room. Pissed him off royally but damn..I couldn’t get any sleep. And then on the nights I did sleep with him and was woken by the snoring, I would lay there and listen to him stop breathing.

Finally I told him he had two choices get the sleep study done or he could sleep alone and he better increase the insurance policy to five mil because if I was going to end up a widow, I want to be a rich widow.

He had the sleep study done. His apnea was so extreme that he stopped breathing every 30 seconds. He didn’t even make it to fifteen minutes into the study before the tech woke him and made him wear a mask.

Like GW, he sleeps with it any time he is going to sleep. The difference it has made is amazing. Before he got the machine he was ALWAYS tired and would take three to four mini-naps a day. And let’s not forget moody, bitchy, grumpy, and all around miserable old fart.

The only down side is the poor guy gets smacked in the mask every so often while sleeping. There are holes in the front of it for the air to escape; when we face one another sleeping it blows in my face and I don’t like anything blowing in my face so my reflex is to smack whatever is bothering me…makes for a very rude awakening for the hubs.

In summation…Get the sleep study done. It is worth it!

Vrail, for YEARS, told me something was wrong with my breathing. Same thing, stopped breathing, for long periods, come roaring back to life, gasping. I passed it off as being a life long snorer.

Well, I was visiting a friend and sleeping on his couch. I woke up and he was sitting there, on a kitchen chair, right next to me, observing me, like I was a lab experiment. I came to, wondered what the eff evil he was up to, shaving cream, writing on my face with some vile substance, whatever, and he just said "Gide, you're ####ed up." and that was IT.

So, I get home and his brother shows up at his house, he's an MD, and he calls me. This is days later. And he says "Larry, you have sleep apnea. Go to your doctor, tell them you need sleep study, they will diagnose you and set you up with a machine."

He went on to explain what was happening, why, how apnea depletes your blood oxygen level and how the length of day time is NOT enough to replenish it, that it is an accumulative harm that affects every cell in your body that needs oxygen (all of them).

Then, he said, "don't waste time. If you don't get this addressed soon, it WILL kill you. Not in 20 years. Soon."

Vrail was pissed at me because he got me to go when she couldn't. I told her she filled the baskets, planted the seed, prepared me for this and this simply was the last straw.

Cautionary tale. Obstructive sleep apnea leads to premature death of a lot more people than we commonly hold and no doubt it leads to decreased quality of life a lot earlier in those that it doesn't kill real early.

Died in his sleep.
